Kauai Trip Report
Just returned from our second trip to Kauai. Wow, what a place and what a different trip. We decided to avoid the high cost tourist traps like the Beach House and A Pacific Cafe - been there, done that. In return, we got fabulous food, great service and a very relaxing trip. Thanks to all for the following recommendations - I can't wait to go back:
Bubba Burgers Coconuts - Lobster Ravioli, Seafood Cigars, Pina Coladas (best of the trip) Brick Oven Pizza La Playita Azul - special fish with butter cream sauce and grilled vegetables was divine. Tip Top Cafe Hanalei Dolphin Mema's Thai Lappert's Ice Cream Couldn't swing a couple of places like Postcards. . . next time for sure Took Duke's off the list. After loving it 3 years ago, we found the place to be too mainstream - with food and service to match. |
You make my mouth water just reading about the places you ate, especially La Playita Azul and Tip Top Cafe...So was Coconuts the best restaurant or the best Pina Coladas?
Welcome home, it's sad to leave isn't it? .((d)) |
Happy Monday?
I STILL don't get everyone's fascination with Kauai! :^o How the "H" can I forget about the seafood cigars, too. I guess my brain shut down after 2 lobster ravs. We loved the "Gilligan's Island menus" at C'nuts too. All this build up for La Playita Azul so it better be good! How was the service at Mema's? We didn't go last trip due to it's "rushed service" even tho the restaurant wasn't crowded at all. They brought out all the food, appies, soup, main course, at the same time. Food was good but with so many good restaurants in the area, we went elsewhere last trip. Wish I only had around 18days to go like some people from NJ that we know and love! ;) |
...That's 17 days to go now, Kalster - c'mon, stay with me on this!!!((R))((B))

Sorry.
I'm just a State Kolledge grad and Mrs Kal was using the Kalulator to figure out how many mo' days until the next marathon she's "not going to run anymore". Wave when you fly over! Kal |
I am still a little upset over missing Brick Oven (they were closed the day we were on the south shore)...however, had been open we would have missed out on Camp House Grille's homemade chips & salsa and AWESOME pies. Glad you had a great trip!

We went to Mema's for a late lunch. The place was empty, but the service was attentive and the Pad Thai was good - very fresh vegetables.
I really enjoyed La Playita Azul. I believe a husband-wife team own/run. Both were attentive and very interested in the diner selecting and enjoying the meal. The place is small - only about a half dozen tables, but you can get in and out fairly quickly. They now have a beer and wine - which was different than what the Kauai Underground book indicated. Kal - hope you enjoy it! |
Iceeu2 - best coladas and the best meal. We ended up going twice; we loved the placed so much.

Reading all of the posts regarding trips to Hawaiian islands can get confusing. My wife and I are going in Sept. for 15 days. We like to bike, hike and snorkle. My alternative life style is to eat and lay about. So, if I had to narrow my trip to 2 islands, what do I choose between BI, Maui and Kauai.

Aloohaaa,
When it comes to being a "Tri-athlete" (eating, drinking and laying about) I have no prob. recommending Kauai as one of the choices. And if you reallllyyyy feel like hiking, snorkleing, Kauai is no ka oi! IT'S FRIDAYYYY! ((B))((D))((B))((D)) Kal |
