Kauai Trip Report

Aloha!

My husband & I just returned from our first trip to Kauai. We had a fantastic time - due in no small part to advice I read on this forum & in "The Ultimate Guide to Kauai". While the whole island and trip was wonderful, some parts definitely stood out:

- Staying at Plantation Retreat (www.plantationretreat.com). If you're looking for a luxury resort or hotel accomodations, stop reading right now. However, if you're looking for something off the beaten path, secluded, somewhat rustic and totally unique, check out the website above. I can't say enough good things about our stay here. (Feel free to email me with specific questions & I'd be more than happy to give details.)

- Taking a helicopter ride. There is a reason why everyone says to do this! They aren't kidding - it's a great experience. We went with Jack Harter, and while I have nothing to compare it to (first time in a helicopter), it was worth every penny. Even hubby who was a little worried about it was raving about the experience.

- Hiking. Although we aren't "hikers", we thoroughly enjoyed the few we went on. If you just go to Kauai and sit on the beach you are missing a big chunk of the island. The red dirt ruined a few pairs of socks and sneakers, but you can't complain once you see the views!

- The food. We ate in restauraunts across all price ranges & only came across one meal we didn't really enjoy. Our favorites were Coconuts and The Beach House.

I know there are plenty of people out that have a lot more experience with this island, but if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to add my two cents!

Alohaaaaa minny,
Why anyone would go to Kauai is beyond me! ;^D
Sounds like a great trip! 297 more days until we go back and get the lobster ravs at Coconuts or watch a gorgeous sunset at The Beach House!

We flew Jack Harter 2x and enjoyed both experiences. We got the original Jack the first trip over way back when.
He really loved and respected that island and it showed thru his tours.

I will be checking out the web for your hotel. Sounds interesting.

Mahalo,
Kal

Aloha Kal!

You know, I got a lot of information from all of your posts for our trips, so thanks! Before we went there, I was kind of wondering "why does Kal keep going back? Aren't there other places he & Mrs. Kal would want to go?" I fully understand now! I don't know if we'll get there again anytime soon, but I look forward to when we can get there again.

Minny,
Hahahahaha...Yep...We will keep on going back until we get it right!

And, yes...we do go to other places.
So far this year we only have Chicago (Cubs baseball) and New Orleans (Saints football) on the schedule and we are also putting away "Europe 2003" money as we type!

Life is tooooo short to stay home!
Not that life is sooo short, it's that death is sooo long!

This Dec/Jan trip we are seriously considering a 3-4 day stay on the west side of Kauai. Hey! We're trying something different.
Kal

Uh-oh Kal that sounds kind of risky. 2 or 3 days away from the best mai tais may feel longer than it is. Good news, closer to Polihale Beach.

Hi Minnywall!
You mentioned on another thread that you stayed in Moloaa Bay for three nights (and that it was remote). Can you tell me which place (URL?). I looked at Plantation Retreat, and while it looks fabulous, I still want to be on the beach...Like you, don't need luxury, just beauty and clean quarters. and the killer view of course!
Thanks!
Joan

Hi Joan -

Here's the link for the place we stayed at Moloaa Bay: http://rfreedom.com/paradise/paradise.htm#rates

We stayed at Plantation Retreat for 5 nights and the above place for 3 nights. It was great to see both sides of the island - jungle & beach. If you want more information about our stay after you check out the link, let me know!
