Kauai Trip For Wedding
Four of us are planning a trip to Kauai in May of 2002 for weddings - one couple is marrying and one is renewing vows. None of us have ever been to Hawaii/Kauai and have heard that the South Shore is the place to stay, as it rains too much on the North Shore. Because we're staying so long (8 days) we are wanting to rent a home or free-standing condo (for privacy) while we're there. Anyone have any experience with this? Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, the dry season on the north shore is from May-October. When we went in July, the north shore was dry and the water more placid than the south shore. The north shore is far more picturesqued than the south and should not be missed. I would be tempted to spend the time between the two..meaning some nights on the south and some on the north. As to where to stay longer term I can't help you as we stayed at resorts.

Sunset at Poipu Beach was one of the most romantic I've seen. We were there the first week in December.

easy answer if ya got the bucks. hyatt or marriott. hyatt is the place to be hands down. however if price is a consideration the marriott will do just as well.i've seen all of the isalnds and we are going to maui in a week, it's not my favorite island as kauai is but with a free 7 nights who can complain right?
good luck and let me know what happens.
s.y.

Hi Misty, you're getting an early start on your trip plans! That's great - you have a lot of time to research everything, and you'll find that you get tons of opinions on this message board. I spent hours reading all the Kauai postings before our trip.

I just returned from my wedding and honeymoon in Kauai. It was truly magical and I highly recommend it! If you are looking for wedding planning advice, feel free to email me. Ours turned out to be a very sentimental and beautiful wedding (I was a little wary about it since it's so popular these days).

Regarding rain, we chose the south shore for our wedding to minimize the chance of rain during the ceremony. But - it still rained on us, even in Poipu! Thankfully, it was a brief and light shower. The North shore definitely gets more rain, even in the summer.

We stayed at the Marriotte (Lihue) and absolutely loved it. but I can understand wanting to stay in a condo. We got married in Poipu (South Shore), and it would have been more convenient to stay in that area. You can easily find a condo in the Poipu area.

To me, the North shore is much prettier than the south, but the beaches seem better on the south. If you're getting married on the south side, I just think it would be so much more convenient to stay on the south side. We went to the North side for hiking and dining a couple of time (but it wasn't enough). We agreed to stay on the North shore when we return for a future anniversary.

Good luck. Kauai is so incredible, you can't go wrong. And like I said, feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

Aloha!
Audra

The north shore is definitely much prettier than the south but it does rain more there. My husband and I stayed on the north shore and never regretted it. In May you should be okay. if it rains you can always go a short distance away and find sun. Try looking at vrbo.com or vacation spot.com and try to rent a condo or home from an owner-saves lot's of money. Also go to wizardpub.com and check out the aerial photos of the resorts. the "Ultimate Kauai" book does a nice job rating the resorts and restaurants!
