kauai questions
 

hi to all.

family is going to kauai in a few months and had a few questions.

plan on doing some surfing. have heard the east coast is the best for a noob, anyone have any specific beaches they would suggest.

also want to take the wife and kids on a boat tour to na pali. do any of the tours allow infants? would have a 6 month year old with us.

You can check Liko's in Waimea he has a powercat and leaves out of the small boat harbor just west of the Waimea Plantation Cottages.

i should have clarified that we will be on the north coast and would want to originate from there.

East coast beaches always seem to have the rough surf here on Kaua`i. Since you'll be on the northshore, Hanalei Bay is usually good in spring/summer...either Pine Trees, or the hook below Princeville Hotel.

Boat tours all have minimum-age requirements; no infants allowed on any of them.

I would not take a young child on a boat tour of the Na Pali coast. It can be very rough and dangerous.

My brother lived in Kauai for many years and is a semi pro surfer. He liked Tunnels because it was out of the way from the tourists. However, the surf and water conditions on the north shore or Na Pali area can be very dangerous because there are lots of rip currents.

understand seas can be rough. we have a 5 year old who along with my wife and I would love to see the coast by boat. baby would be fine. we drag our kids everywhere and dont want to miss out on experiences. i thought i saw one charter who might allow it, maybe i'm mistaken. cant seem to find the link again. would definately hope for a calm day though.

boat seemed logical since we probably wont make the entire hike, with the 5 year old, he will make a mile or so in and then bribes of chocolate will wear thin. are there any private boat rentals around.

grew up surfing in florida, but havent been out for 10 years or so. am looking for breaks with easy to catch waves and no crazy reef dangers. would also like to avoid any beaches with aggresive locals. would definately like to meet cool locals and surf with them, but not looking for the california style BS. Im too old for that shit.

In the summer most of the breaks are reef breaks as far as I know. At Kiahuna there is an area where a lot of lessons are given. It's a very sloooow wave, so if you fall you probably won't hit the reef.
I think the Westshore has some shorebreak but those areas could be very localized. Kealia beach has a shore break and that beach is just north of Kapa'a.
Surfing Hawaii in is like everywhere. Respect the locals, stay out of their way and try to at least get a decent tan before you paddle out. :)

Anyway, we took our 4 year old on a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast years ago and she would have been tossed into the ocean if I hadn't been holding her super tightly. So be very careful.
I 've found the locals at the surf shops/diving shops are also very helpful with advice where to surf.
