Kauai Questions

9 Days and counting till I'm back on this glorious Island.

2 questions to anyone who has been there recently or lives there.

1 Is the Whaler's Brew Pub in the old Fashion landings shopping plaza at the Marriott(old Westin) complex still open?

2 What is the going price on a gallon of gas these days?

Drop a note on here or email if anyone knows.

Jillwen Jul 8th, 2003 05:17 PM

When I was there in late May, gas was $2.30 a gallon.

Rich,
When we were there in March...

The Whalers Brew Pub was open...we made talked with 2 couples who had been there just the day before and said the view was wonderful, but the food was a whole lot less than wonderful...They were not at all impressed

Gas was $2.30/gallon

9 days.......lucky you and yours!!

The view is worth a stop for a soda and pupus.

Thamks to all and Is;and Mom, I totally agree on the view. Plus I really enjoy their coconut shrimp appetizers and also their clam chowder is great.

Whalers Brewpub has just about the worst food on Kauai rarely will you see a local resident dining there! It is dirty to boot!

Gas was $2.27 over the weekend.

Vivi,
Thanks for the tip. It is such a shame because it is a lovely location and view. I have only done appetizers there.

vivi Jul 9th, 2003 01:34 PM

Yes, it is a HUGE shame that Whaler's has such continually crummy food and sevice beacuse it has one of the most spectacular views on Kauai. (Best view, however) is from Hanalei Cafe at P-Ville Hotel.

Most business lunches in Lihue are conducted at Gaylords or JJ's, Whalers is a one time only spot, LOL.

Vivi,
Nice talking to you. I assume you live on the island. We will be there on Friday 7/18 and staying till 8/8. We stay at the cliffs, so we have a view not too shabby. I first stayed at Princeveille Hotel the first year it opened as a Sheraton, I believe it was 1985. It was a great Hotel back then, very personable and intimate.

Well, thanks again, drop me a line if you'd care to share a drink or lunch with us. It would be great to face to face with someone from hear, and pick your brain for more local knowledge. we were supposed to have 12 people staying at the cliffs, but 3 had to drop out due to a daughters accident that left her with a broken pelvis.

Yes, I do live on Kauai ; I I have been to every restaurant, hotel, and beach! So ask away if you have any more questions. (I am in CA at the moment where it is beastly hot, the tropics would actually be refreshing!)

Vivi,
Hope you're enjoying your time in Cali (I lived there 33 years) - come visit us in Arizona if you some real heat - it was 116 degrees today! I can't wait to get to Kauai in two weeks - even if it's in the 90's it'll be refreshing! I have a question for you: my hubby recently lost his job but we're still going on vacation (call us crazy!) but on a budget (gasp!) We LOVE fine dining and usually spend a LOT on dinners, usually the best places in town - where will we find great food for reasonable prices? (Don't laugh too hard...) I'm talking $100/day for lunch and dinner for 2... (limited boozin'). Mostly around the Poipu area as that is where we'll spend most of our time. We're not into "American" food - burgers, ribs, etc., but prefer local, Asian, PacRim, Italian, Mexican, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks!!! :-)

margot55 Jul 13th, 2003 05:22 AM

((R))Aloha - as for the price of gas question, we found that the prices for regular clustered in the $2.17-$2.20 range, except for, of course, in Princeville, where the Chevron there was $2.33 (this info is current as of 7/10). Re: the reasonable dining question, if you're willing to venture away from the Poipu area, your options increase. There's always Brick Oven Pizza in Kalaheo, which really does make an exceptional pie, unlike any we've had on the mainland, Pomodoro, also in Kalheo, just across the street from Brick oven for reasonable and good Italian food, and then, for Pac Rim fare, the east side has many fine and affordable options, i.e. Coconuts in the Kapaa area, Kintaro for excellent sushi and Japanese fare, very reasonably priced, and in the Safeway shopping center in Kapaa is tucked away a little Mexican restaurant called La Playita Azul, good for lunch or dinner - huge portions, very good. So...if you're willing to drive 20-30 minutes outside Poipu, you'll have more options. Have a great trip, let us know how it went!

Stachi Jul 13th, 2003 02:44 PM

Thanks, Margot! I have heard of many of those restaurants but was not sure how reasonable they were in price. I can't wait to check them out. I'll let ya'll know how are trip was when we get back!

Stachi,
When are you going to Kauai? We are leaving Friday, 7/18 for three weeks in Princeville.

tinatoadster Jul 13th, 2003 05:43 PM

Rich:
Just got back yesterday. Thanks to you and all the fellow fodorites, we took many suggestions and had a great time.

Gas was $2.25 per gallon or so, a little less on Honolulu.

We had a great time!! Enjoy yours--

RichinPA Jul 14th, 2003 08:55 AM

Tina,
Thanks, glad you were able to make use of some of my info. We leave Friday morning, guess I better start packing.

Stachi Jul 27th, 2003 11:21 AM

Rich,
Well, we were suppose to leave yesterday (7/26) for 8 nights in Poipu, but we cancelled after all. Or postponed I should say. We are going to try to reschedule for later in August or September (assuming the job situation improves) and will stay in Princeville instead (we're using Starwood points and were going to stay at the Sheratorn Poipu but decided we'll stay at the Princeville Hotel instead - from all I've read it's the better of the two hotels, although we'll get one less free night). When you return I'd love to read you trip report, in case we do actually make it! Too bad we didn't go, we could have met for a drink. Hope you had a great time!
