Kauai Question

We will be arriving in Kauai late morning Lihue airport. We can't check into our hotel the Hyatt (Poipu area) until 3pm. We will have 3 hours to find something to do. Can we make it to Waimea and back. We would not be hiking Waimea. Just going to a couple of lookout points. Are there any waterfalls to find on the way? Any suggestions?

Why not just bring your bags to the front desk, and have them hold 'em. Change into your swim wear and relax by the pool with a drink. You are probably going to be tired if you are coming from the mainland. If you are coming from another island and are ready to go, there is some nice walking around the grounds just beyond the Hyatt, Mahaullepo(?). You might as well do Waimea in one day, but thats just my opinion.

taking the direct flight in from SF? We did this last August, go to Hyatt change in their courtesy room, use the pool they will keep your bags in a safe luggage hold and send to your room when it is ready. This is the Hyatt not a youth hostel. You can request an early check in (low season this probably wont be a problem), late check out day you leave.

Contact them ahead of time and request an early check in time. I have rarely had a problem checking in early. If you can't check in early, they will hold your bags. Change into your swim suit and relax by the pool or go to the beach.

Yes, do not assume you cannot check in until three. Ask when you arrive, and they will give you one of three answers:

1) The room has been cleaned and is ready, yes you can check-in.

2) No, the room is not yet ready, but give us "x" time and we'll prepare it for you.

3) No, the room will not be ready until three.

In cases 1 or 2, see above posts.
Agree with above posts but to answer your question, yes you can drive up to the Waimea Canyon and back in 3 hrs.
