Kauai Quandary

We are going thru the finishing touches of our honeymoon planning and we are torn between the North and South. We are going in mid September and like the Hyatt on the south shore. But everyone says the north shore is more beautiful with better beaches. The beaches don't bother us too much because the pools and lagoons at the Hyatt look great, but we don't want to feel like we are missing out on the "Kauai experience" by staying on the south shore.
Any advise?

I love the North Shore--much more beautiful than the South. The Hyatt does have some nice pools and lagoons but they will be full of kids with floating toys and such--not a quiet, romantic experience.

But...grabbing a picinic and heading to a beach on the North side--remarkable.

Smanning, We were in Kauai this Sept. Went to the Hyatt and saw very few kids actually it was post 9/11 so we didn't really see anyone. Have gone to Hawaii several times in Sept and the kid ratio is way down. We visited the north shore from the south side and the drive there in our convertible was great. We didn't have a need to stay on the north, hotel wise. Others disagree.

You are missing out IMHO if you stay exclusively on the South Shore although hiking trips in Alakai Swamp, along the west coast and in around the canyon are also a bit of splender. YOU CAN'T do everything. I think a week on the south or West is nice and then a week on the North Shore.

Smanning,
Why Kauai? That rat hole? ;^D
310 mo' days until we go back for our 11th visit!

Sept. should be "safe enough" weatherwise for the NoShore but, you can't go wrong w/ the So. Shore at anytime. But, there's no guarantee on Kauai weather! Ever!!

Since you'll prob. be there long enough, it's a very nice convertible car ride (right Suuuz?) to both the west and north shores. With good traffic thru Kapaa/Wailua maybe 1hr to P'ville.
(Take the bypass to get you around traffic in Kapaa).

Sunset from Polihale is a very nice Kauai experience.

If it is a clear day, the trip up to Kokee and as mentioned before, Alakai area/Kalalau and Puuo Kila lookouts are gorgeous!
310 can't go by quick enuff!
Mucho mahalos,
Kal

Have been to Kauai three times, fourth time coming up this summer. Each time have stayed at Hyatt in Poipu. It is true, there is no beach there, but the pools are fantastic, and I disagree with the first poster, never have felt like there are too many kids. Another benefit of Poipu, in three times there, we have had rain one day. However, every time we drove to the north, it rained on and off most of the way, and when we were there. The weather in the south is better.
