Kauai - Polihale State Park

Does anyone know if Polihale State Park is open? You used to be able to drive down an old sugarcane road to get to this beach. We usually do it in a Jeep due to the size of the potholes. But I read somewhere that the road is closed indefinitely. Is this true? And is their an alternative to accessing the beach/park. Can we park at the Naval base that boarders Barking Sands?

Also, is it true that all beaches in the state of Hawaii are accessible to the public, even if the land around them is private?

The latest news I could find suggested a "possible" reopening in mid-June depending on the state budget.

We had been told all beaches are open to the public however you still need to get property owners permission if crossing their land to access the beach. As far as crossing government property I would want written permission plus either an escort or detailed directions to and from the beach including time it is usable.

I found the picture here especially bad. http://www.kauaiworld.com/articles/2...a987026171.txt

I realize that this is probably a low priority for the state. It would be nice if the Federal Government tossed in a few million dollars to help rebuild this beach/park. I don't think that it needs a paved road, but maybe a graded road.
You would think that the state government would try to make a deal with the federal government for access to a state park/beach.

Like the rest of the U.S, money is real tight for state goverments. There just isnt any money for these type of projects. I would think that because the road was damaged by the december rains, that there would be some type of federal funding available. This is a big issue on Kauai, especially with the surfing community, as Polihale has several great surf spots.
