I've got to say, I wouldn't mind being rescued by Sam Lee!

But in all seriousness, you might want to post this in the Hawaii section and not the Colorado section, although hiking and snow sports in Colorado can be treacherous as well.

Thx a mint for taking the time to post this. Such a tragedy for that lady vacationer. Glad the 54 others were all safe.

I followed a lot of links from your original and it really made me to be aware of the dangers, especially since it seems like I've not been anywhere near the power of the ocean around Hawaii. I wouldn't stand on the rocks in Maine with the waves crashing on the rocks, why would I think it was safe to do so in Hawaii just because it is warmer. Reminds me to stop and re-assess as conditions change and not view it as a means to an end. Also, follow our own sense and not just follow a crowd/group.

Enjoy-la!

Hawaii is wise to tackle this problem - they are making many changes and getting the word out about the dangers. Smart.

They are apparently asking tourist/guide/travel book editors to include warnings & information. I hope Fodor's is one of those!

I've also read they are now showing the ocean safety video in the baggage claim at Lihue airport, which is great.

safety videos are great tools in the baggage claim area. However, i've stood there waiting for clients fresh off mainland flights numerous times and guests seemed to focus on claiming their luggage. Airlines have been presented with letters of concern signed by Dr Downs, ER doctor at Kauai Wilcox hospital and Sue Kanoho, executive director Kauai visitors bureau saying warnings need to be presented inflight before guests land. Fell on deaf ears. Worried about their bottom dollar profits potentially scaring off visitors instead of preempting further absolutely unnecessary drowning deaths. Fight the good fight...
