Kauai/Molokai Advice
 

Hi. We're staying in Banyan Harbor Kuaui for a week (end of May through June 5th) (time share points) and we've got our airfare leaving an extra 3 days. We'd like to see Molokai. Any suggestions for getting from Kauai to Molokai (without using 2 coupons each) and also need suggestions on where to stay in Molikai.

When we lived on Kauai I went to Molokai several times. I flew to Maui, drove to Lahaina, then took the ferry from Lahaina to Molokai. This would only require one air coupon each but then there is the problem of getting to and from Lahaina for the ferry ride. You would have to go on the late afternoon ferry (5-ish??) to avoid paying for a hotel room in Maui the night before.

Do you recall what the better way(s) to see the tall sea cliffs of Molokai are;((?))by ferry, or by interisland flight plane, or from Molokai itself?

JohnD - we took the ferry over last year and you can't see the cliffs, as it approaches from the south. We also drove up to the overlook, but that just looks down onto the Kalaupapa peninsula. I don't know if you can see them from down on the peninsula, itself - my mother wasn't up for hiking or riding mules down there. Approaching by air might be the best.

The only time I have seen the sea cliffs was by chance, flying over Molokai on an interisland flight. The ferry doesn't pass by them.

If you have time, the mule ride is a MUST. The tour of Kalaupapa is awesome and really, probably the MOST beautiful place in the world.

The fact that it's all stuck in the 50's/60's is what makes it a fascinating place. And yes, the history itself is amazing.

As for getting there and away...can't help you there. But going down the cliffs on the mule and then getting the tour of the area was really a great trip for us.

Reply to <font color="blue">hulagirl</font>, the mule ride sounds like a wild adventure, but I suspect I'm too far up there with Kahuna <font color="blue">Kal</font> and would need the ((B))Clydesdale of mules.:))

Ya-ummm, stay on the wet side of Molokai unless you like Kansas. We stayed on the Dry side and HATED it.
