Kauai Marriott Resort Ok?

we have been given a week at the Marriott Resort in Kauai for our honeymoon as a gift, if we want it (or they can give us a week elsewhere for vacation next year.) Is this a good, nice place to stay? We like nice sandy beaches, clean rooms with balonies and great views, the sound of the ocean. Thank you in advance for honest feedback.

The Kauai Marriott is on a bay. Though it's got a nice sandy beach, good for swimming and beginner surfing, the view from the property does not look out to the open ocean.

As for the rooms, sounds like you're in a time-share unit. Just like a hotel, people pay more or less for a time-share unit depending on location and view. I think I remember seeing some without balconies, and I know I remember seeing some without views. It might be awkward, but if a balcony and view are important, you talk with the folks who gifted this before selecting the Marriott as a honeymoon resort.

Just stayed at the Kauai Marriott Resort for my 31st wedding anniversary. It is a beautiful resort, had a 1 bedroom ocean front. It had a nice view of the bay. We had a king size bed, two full bathrooms, full kitchen, 2 tv's, large living area with couch, vcr,,,, our lanai was on the front so we had a view of the bay (not extremely big) but large enough for a table and 2 chairs. I don't think that you will be disappointed.....The good news that you will be on your honeymoon in Hawaii and it sounds like it's free and you can't beat that!

Do they have refrigerators or microwaves in the room?

I stayed three nights recently after a condo in Poipu. We had an oceanview room with balcony (they don't all have balconies, however) and the room did have a small fridge (unstocked) which worked out nicely. I agree it's not the nicest view in Hawaii, on the bay with the port in the background, but the beach was nice, the pool huge, and Duke's was fun at night, good food and local band playing. Kauai is my favorite island. Maybe go to the Marriott, then splurge at the Hyatt or Princeville for your last few nights?

The interior of the Marriott Resort at Kauai is very nice. However, one dirty little secret they avoid telling first-time guests is that it's right next to the airport.

While the sound may not be deafening, it's not an idyllic location. Also, the bay is pretty but is adjacent to an industrial port. When I was looking for honeymoon locations, my travel agent strongly advised me against staying at the Marriott, which was nice but nothing extraordinary.

We chose to stay at the Hyatt instead, which was fantastic. But given that you get a free stay, it may be worth the $4500 savings in hotel expenses and taxes. You can splurge at restaurants in Poipu and visit the Princeville Hotel on the north shore - and have plenty left over for golf, helicopter rides, etc.

I have to disagree with last poster. It's about 5-10 minutes from airport and you never notice the planes. It's not like the airport is ORD or LGA or LAX; this is hawaii remember. You may occassionally see ships leaving the bay, but it's not like you're on top of them and can see the activity from the beach (you can't). The hotel is very nice. We loved it and are going back in a few short months. We can't wait. Free is always good.

Do the 1 BR timeshare villas at the Marriott Kauai have washer/dryers? How close/far are they from the pool area or the beach area? We're planning a trip there this summer.

Quick rundown. Was there for a week. Property is incredible...beautiful, sprawling, lovely. We had a great time there and the pool is the most incredible pool I've ever seen. For us, it was better than the Hyatt (who needs waterslides), Atlantis or Princeville. The grounds are landscaped to the point that I cannot describe them. I don't know what the previous post about not being ocean front is about, but the bay is part of the ocean and our room had a great view of it, and we could hear it at night when we slept with the sliding door open. Can't remember about fridge's, but frankly did not care. Bars were nice...snacks, shave ice, bansaii blossoms and mai tais at the pool bar. Close to the airport and I did notice it, but only during the day. It is an island afterall and flights aren't coming in 24 hours a day. I noticed it when we were by the pool. You'll want a car and you'll want to allow a few days to explore. You'll also want to go buy Kauai Revealed and you'll also want to not question anything that book says.....it is right on 100% of the time as far as I've seen. I was there about four years ago but would be happy to answer any questions you have. Don't forget to have the dessert at Dukes, right next to the hotel. I forget what it is called, but you'll know it when you see it on the menu. It's the one with the mac nuts.

I can't vouch for the content of these sites or that they even are still active, but I used these to plan my last trip.

Someone said that there is an ugly view of a "factory" of some sort from the Marriott - is this true? Anyone?

melissa,
The Kauai Marriott is on a bay separated by a long jetty from the harbor/port where the cruise and other ships dock. The port buildings are not attractive, and do have a sort of factory look. But you don't see those from the resort. Our room directly faced the port. We could see cruise ships, but none of the port buildings.

As far as its proximity to the airport, you'll see many more helicopters than planes. And neither is particularly distracting.
