Kauai: Marriott or Sheraton?

Hi All! Husband and I are trying to figure out if we should stay at the Sheraton Kauai in Poipu or the Kauai Marriott in Lahaina during our November 2004 trip. Can you please provide me your experiences with these two hotels (e.g. room size, cleanliness, service, grounds, location, etc.). In case this helps in providing comments, we are in early 30's, no kids, and will be getting an OF or OV room at whichever resort we choose. We considered the Hyatt, but too expensive. We've found very comparable rates at Sheraton and Marriott. I look forward to hearing people's preferences between these two Kauai resorts. Thanks much! ~Tracey

Tracey,
I have stayed at the Marriott in Lihue (you have Lahaina) and it is wonderful. It has a pretty beach in front of it and you can watch the criuse ship come into the Harbor. It does not sit directly on the Pacific but on the Harbor. It is grand and beautiful and the rooms are adequate. I have not stayed at the Sheraton but do know people who liked it as well. I love the location of the Marriott for first timers to Kauai becuase you are nicely situated to go the North side (Princeville) which is a must do and equally close or so to Poipu and the Canyon another must do! Also, Duke's is a great place to eat and a lot of fun. The rooms are very roomy and the grounds gorgeous...over 2 million tiles in an exquisite pool..the pool is to die for. Service is good too. I think you can't miss at the Marriott. I have stayed there twice and was not disappointed.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, oooops, meant to say Lihue - not Lahaina (got my islands mixed up). Looking for additional responses from folks - positive and negative about either place. Thanks much!

Another vote for the Marriott! We have stayed there four times (have a timeshare there) and LOVE it everytime. We like eating at Duke's which is partically attached to the hotel, drinking Lava Flows from the beachside bar, relaxing in the beautiful pool/spa area...what a place. We also like it because you are in the middle belwteen Poipu and Princeville.

Have fun and enjoy a Lava Flow for me!

Another vote for the Marriott in Lihue. Check out the timeshare portion for rentals....it's a 2 room suite with 2 full baths. Look at the photos on the vacation club website. Duke's is a fun place with good food.

No doubt about it, I'd stay at the Marriott. The Marriott is everything the people above have said about it.

The Sheraton is not really a resort. It's an old hotel (unrenovated) and a newer hotel (on the ocean) divided by a road.

I've stayed at both. The staff at the Marriott has it all over the Sheraton. The pool is no contest and the beach more swimmable at the Marriott. More central location too.
