Kauai lodging help needed

We are planning to visit Kauai for two weeks in the early part of September, and figure we should spend 5 nights in the Poipu area and the remaining 7 near Haena/Tunnels Beach or Hanalei Bay/Princeville.

It would be very easy to just book the Grand Hyatt in Poipu and the Princeville Resort on the North Shore; however, we would like to bring the cost down by at least one-third.

Please recommend mid-range, decent hotels or motels for us to research. ( I'm somewhat reluctant to rent a condo or house.)

On the south shore the other hotels that I know of are the Sheraton and the Marriott Waiohai.

On the north shore there is the Hanalei Bay Resort. The units are more like condos.

The others that I mentioned to you on a previous thread are condos.

Many fodorites take advantage of discount rates at the Hyatt by using the stay certificates (which I know nothing about). Maybe MBnancy will chime in with how take advantage of that deal. She raves about it and her time at the Hyatt.

Indeed I do rave about the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. We were just there last month. There are a few things I suggest to help with the cost.

One is the Sunshine on Sale package, (called Three for Free in the winter) which we used. Stay 4 nights the 5th is free, plus Double room upgrade (so pay for cheaper room)and get ocean deluxe, and the buffet breakfast included each day, which is $28 a person if you had to pay for it. There is a mini frig provided in each room and you are able to keep food items in there to help with the cost.

The Stay Certificates are for 3 nights and are $249 a night. Others on this board have used them and report getting room upgrades from the Garden View and also up to 5 nights at that price.

There are rates off the internet as well, but I still like the one with the breakfast included.

I'm sorry, I don't understand how those Stay Certificates work!

Thanks for your input, iamq and MBnancy.

Not a hotel but the Kauai Banyan Inn is recommended, near Poipu about 10mins away from the sea but at rate of $105-£130 you can't go wrong.
