Kauai Info
 

My husband and I are planning our 2nd honeymoon in Kauai in May of '98. From what I've seen accommodation is pretty pricey . . . anyone know of any great places to stay at a reasonable price? Also if anyone knows of any 'must sees' while we're there, please pass that on too!

Aloha Lea Ann! We were in Kauai in August.We stayed
on the North shore at the Hanalei Bay Resort and
Suites. It overlooks the beautiful Hanalei Bay.If
you've ever seen the movie South Pacific with Mitzi
Gaynor that's exactly what we saw every day outside our
room! The resort is opposite the Princeville
Resort which is the TOP place to stay on Kauai.
We stayed in the one bedroom suite at Hanalei Bay
which included a king bedroom,fully equipped
kitchen, two televisions,washer and dryer and
everything else. The suite was very large. I think
it was 1250 sq ft. Also included was a full cooked-to-order breakfast (anything you wanted from
the menu) for each of us, plus in the afternoon
two complimentary cocktails from their lounge. It's
a very lush and beautiful property all by itself
overlooking Hanalei Bay. It's one of the best values
we found in Hawaii. Even the local guidebook highly
recommends them. We're planning to go back again
next summer.
As for activities, take the Na Pali tour on one of
the tour companies the runs out of Hanalei Bay.
Stay away from the zodiacs unless you like rough
rides. The companies with the hard bottom catamarans
offer a smoother and drier ride.

We are also planning a trip to kauai, but in July and have considered the Hanalei Bay Resort, but understand that is the rainy side of the island and we are a little scared to stay there. Is that something to be afraid of in July? We are taking our two children ages 12 and 8 and too many rainy days does not sound like a good time with them. Any thoughts on this?

My husband and I were there in May '97 to celebrate our fifth anniversary. I agree, that Hanalei is worth going to. We spent three days there and it was not as crowded as Lihue. The drive is wonderful. All of Hawaii is pricey. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast...be aware that the b&b's go fast.

I was in Kauai in May and was looking for reasonable accommodations for my boyfriend and me. We ended up in a B&B that was pretty underwhelming for $100 a night. If I had it to do over again, I would pay the $300+/per night and stay at the Hyatt Kauai in Poipu (the sunny side of the island).

The grounds are incredible! A beautiful lobby and a bar area that overlooks the ocean framed in sort of a picture window. I don't know what the rooms look like, but the grounds are spectacular!

Plus, in the B&B I got all bit up by mosquitos. Had eight ugly red bites all over my legs. Needless to say, I was rather embarrased to wear my shorts.

If you stay in Poipu, a drive to Hanalei is not all that far. Why don't you stay in both places and decide which side of the island you like best?
