Kauai Hotels (Decision to be made)

Me and my wife will be traveling to Kauai in early August for the first time. We are able to stay at Sheraton resorts on a very good discount. So our plan is to stay on the north side of Kauai for 4 days and then stay on the South side for 4 more days. On the North side we plan on staying at the Princeville, however the next 4 night, on the south side, is where my decision needs to be made. I can stay at the Sheraton Kauai in a Ocean view room for $100 less/night than I could at the Hyatt. However, I keep hearing all things great things about the Hyatt and need to know is the Hyatt worth the extra money compared to the Sheraton Kauai. Have not heard much about the Sheraton Kauai.
Thanks to all who respond.

We are also planning a trip to Kauai in July. We have friends that just returned from there and stayed at the Hyatt. They said it is phenomenonal. It is all open air lobbies and lush gardens. They visited the Princeville but preferred the Hyatt. Also, we were looking at splitting our week between the two hotels; however, the Hyatt has a special where you get a night free when you stay 5 nights or more. Have you come accross any better discounts for the Hyatt?

Jamie

Of course, the Hyatt is VASTLY SUPERIOR to the Sheraton!! (But don't expect a white sand beach or calm waters!)

splitting your time between the princeville hotel and the hyatt is a heavenly idea--you will get the best of both worlds Kauai has to offer. The Hyatt is indeed gorgeous, as is Princeville, in different ways, have a great time.
I just returned from Kauai and stayed at the Sheraton Kauai. The hotel has just recently been rebuilt after a hurricane in 1992 and is beautiful. We joined the Starwood membership on the internet and were given a 35% discount on the room and food and drinks at the hotel. Also we were given a full buffet ($15.95)breakfast each daily. We had booked a luxury ocean front room vs a gardenview room at the Hyatt and it's original cost was $425.00 per night. With the discount it was $ 276.00 per night and they upgraded us to a suite which was out of this world. With three balconies overlooking the very swimmable white sand beach, a living room, dining room, bedroom with cathedral ceilings, marble bath with jacuzzi and robes, bar. It was incredible and usually rented for $ 800.00 per night. Yes the Hyatt has a gorgeous lobby and very beautiful grounds but the rooms we glanced into were not that wonderful and I'm sure the gardenview rooms, where the cheapest price I could get was $ 319.00 were not that great. The beach was rough but they did have a large pool with a man made sand beach going into it. So I guess the decision is sumptuous grounds or rooms? We were quite satisfied with what we got at the Sheraton for our money. It is only a 40 minute drive from the north to the south of Kauai so you don't really have to stay in two different places if you don't want to. The Princeville has great views but no beach. It is very opulent and sedate (stuffy) and the restaurants are very expensive there. It also was much cloudier and rainier the day we went up there for lunch.Barb
