Tidepools was wonderful.
Sad to hear bad things about the Beach House, but friends of ours just were there on their honeymoon this past October and they loved it (and they love to cook).

Thanks for the Stevenson Library's tips. Lots of great ideas from everyone already. I would recommend Hanalei Dolphin's fish market for take-outs, especially their fresh fish like monchong, sushi rolls (soft-shelled crab is my favorite), and chowder.

RFR..
Just stayed a week at the Grand Hyatt and the buffet is everyday at the Iliani terrace and its very busy and not just weekends ..at least in Sept 09.

Keoiki's Paradise is actually quite good if you know what to order (chicken stir fry with tons of veggies and rice is one of the best deals for $11) and a good place for decent food and drink..its a T&S restaurant group which owns Kimo's, Hula Grill.

Duke's imo is ok for app's and drinks but you are the only person that I know that enjoys it for dinner...isn't it great to see
King Kamehameha with all the lei's surrounding his neck.

I would definately go to Hamura Saimin for the best lilikoi pie and noodles..it was awarded the coveted James Beard award..super dive and behind the Goodwill in Lihue..you should not miss this place at any cost!

Stevenson Library has a happy hour one drink special with one app.
It is very expensive but a lovely clubby place with a great aloha vibe!
I heard that Tidepools has gotten better too...yeah!

Aloha sf..I've heard mixed on Plantation..wish we got there so I could report back.
I have a free week at the St. Regis and we just missed the Grand Opening..did you get there since they've re-opened?

>>Lunch - Hamura Saimin gets my top vote for lunch or dinner.>>

Ditto. It's a real experience too.
It's very hard to find so get very specific instructions or the correct address and a GPS to guide you!

No. And what do you mean, a "free week"? How'd you do that???

We had breakfast included with our plan at the Hyatt. You should check into that. They have a great breakfast buffet. For dinner we still like the Beach House. It is very romantic. We were there last May and the food was good. We love the Tidepools and Donderos.

Was just in Kauai, in Jan 2010. We stayed in Kapaa for a few days and Poipu at the Sheraton. In Poipu, we enjoyed cheap eats at Savage Shrimp truck, which is a white truck decorated with graffiti, not sure of it's exact location but you really can't miss it if you are staying in the Poipu area as it's on the way into the resorts. We also enjoyed Puka Dog and had fun coming up with different combinations of flavors/sauces.
For fine dining, we had the best food at Roy's. We also had a great experience at Merriman's. Both are in the Poipu area. We had great teriyaki burgers at Bubba's burgers (both Hanalei and Poipu locations) - btw a tip, if you buy a t-shirt from them and wear it, you can free refills on your soda.

If you venture to Kapaa, a nice place for dinner is the Hukilau Lanai.

I also second the Hamura Saimin recommendations as it's just a local experience not to be missed.

I'm working on a trip report but thought I'd update this thread. We had dinner at the Beach House for our anniversary. The setting was great, they had a photographer taking sunset photos and they were actually quite good. We had an appetizer in the bar while waiting on our table, and that was just okay. Our entrees were pretty good and I thought the prices were reasonable for Hawaii.

We went to Keoki's Paradise and ate in the bar our first night. They have a good menu there and a really good ice cream-type pie for dessert(can't remember what it was called). Actually, DH ate there again later in the week while I was shopping and enjoying a Puka Dog. He isn't much of a hot dog fan but I thought Puka Dog was great!

At the Grand Hyatt we had dinner at Dondero's one night and that was quite nice. We didn't try Tidepools. I really didn't enjoy Stevenson's Library at all, very small portions, even if it was just an appetizer, and quite expensive. Maybe we would have enjoyed it more later when they had the live music. We did do the Hyatt breakfast buffet one morning but found that hard to enjoy for the price. If it's included in your package, great, but a big $$ for breakfast IMHO.

Had lunch in Koloa Town at Tomkats, nothing special here. On the North Shore we had lunch at Bouchons - fish tacos were fabulous. We also had lunch at Mariachi's in Lihue and found that to be pretty good too.

Dukes Canoe Club as well as Brenneckes for good food and fantastic views. Roys for excellent food. Gaylords is very romantic with nice food. Stay AWAY from TIDEPOOLS. Mediocre food and terrible service. Went to Keoki's several times and always a disappointment. Casa Blanca at Kiahuna is very nice.

ksucat May 12th, 2010 06:59 AM

Keoki's is a great place and their stir fry is one of the best deals on the island..they are owned by the T&S group and they do a good job with Hula, and Kimo's and Duke's.
Duke's is the same owner as Keoki's!
Tidepools was just renovated and has gotten better.
Roy's is ok but really, who wants to eat looking out at a parking lot?

nobigdeal May 12th, 2010 10:15 AM

I'd be happy eating Roy's butterfish IN the parking lot!

sf7307 May 12th, 2010 10:21 AM

:-) (same goes for their scallops for me)

anna_roz May 13th, 2010 07:20 PM

And almost any appetizer and dessert! :-)

ksucat May 13th, 2010 07:32 PM

LOL..alright..you've all made your very valid butterfish scallop point!
:))

I'll be back in September and will raise my glass to you both.
I'm gonna ask for a parking lot view too!

cots May 14th, 2010 07:59 PM

Ditto on Hamura's Saimin......loved it!

ksucat May 14th, 2010 08:38 PM

Hamura's Saimin with a slice of lilikoi pie..pure heaven!
