Kauai Garden tours
Cheryl and I spend time in Kauai every year - three weeks this year. I don't normally write trip reports about our time in Kauai unless there is something special I want to report on. After recommending a tour of the Allerton and McBryde Gardens to a friend, who came home reporting it was the highlight of their stay on Kauai, I decided I should share this info with my Fodors friends.
The Allerton-McBryde gardens are located on the south shore of Kauai, across the road from the Spouting Horn. They offer a number of tours, including a tour of the formal Allerton Gardens, a Sunset tour, which includes access to the house and dinner, a self-guided tour and the Discovery tour. The guides leading these tours are superb - well-informed, entertaining, and dedicated to their work.
We take one tour each year and this year took the Discovery tour. It is a "behind the scenes tour" for those very interested in the rescue and propagation of endangered endemic plants, and gives you the chance to explore some areas off-limits to the other tours, more natural jungle-like settings as well as the green houses. It was a fabulous tour! The groups for this tour are very small - only 4 people when we went.
The gardens are gorgeous, beautifully designed and with an abundance of native plants. Water features and sculpture abound. There is lots of Hawaiian history in the land, as it was the last home of Queen Emma. Each time I take a garden tour here, I learn new things.
If you love beautiful gardens, I highly recommend taking one of the tours. If you are like us, you will be back year after year.
