Kauai food questions
How easy will it be to avoid Mahi-mahi and macadamia nuts while we are in Kauai? Are there foods where there are "stealth" macadamias? DD & I seem to have developed some weird food allergies recently. I have a mild allergic reaction (hives) after eating mahi-mahi. She has a more severe reaction (anaphylaxis - I will be carrying an epi-pen) when eating something containing macadamias.
We ate at Duke's in Malibu over the weekend. Their fish tacos, fish and chips and fish sandwich all were made with mahi-mahi. Also, many of their appetizers and desserts contained macadamias. We are planning on being vigilant, and will ask the wait staff before ordering anything questionable, but some wait staff aren't always knowledgable about all of the ingredients in a dish. Any advice will be appreciated. We love fish tacos, so if you know of a place that uses a different kind of fish, please share. Also info on dishes, baked goods or sauces that may contain macadamias would be helpful. Thanks so much. 60 days til! ((R)) |
I don't know where you are staying, but if on the east side, we had fish tacos at Olympic cafe. They were supposed to be ahi, and I do believe they were. They were very good.
Be sure to stress the importance of your daughter's reaction because some wait staff don't know and don't care and won't ask. Several years ago, I asked a waitress if a certain dish had cilantro. She assured me that it did not. When I got my food, not only was it in the dish but spread all over the top! Lucky you, only 60 more days until you hear the roosters crow!((r)) |
lvk,
I think it ought to be fairly easy to avoid them. After reading your post I thought about our meal at Casa di Amici in Poipu last summer. An interesting and unusual take on Italian food with many non-fish selections, as well as several fish choices on the menu. It was a nice change of pace. Try the tempura ono at Coconuts. It is quite yummy, and as Kal would say, "It's Onolicious!" We'll be there in 51! I love the pre-trip excitment, don't you? 8-) -Bill |
If you stay away from all the "touristy" restaurants, you should NOT have a problem at all.
|
Thanks, all. The tempura ono sounds great!
Bill, I do like to pre-trip excitement, but not the sense of sole responsibility for all of the planning :). We'll be staying on the North Shore. Any other suggestions for: Fish Tacos? - non mahi-mahi, of course Tuna Poke? Sushi?(We will try Sushi Blues) Malasadas? Grocery stores? We are also looking forward to checking out the Hanalei Farmers Market. Thanks again! ((R)) |
lvk:
Since the fish in fish tacos is always fried (argh...not so in Mexico!), you might want to try fish 'n chips instead. At Hanalei Gourmet, I've had 'em made with every imaginable fish -- ahi, ono, opakapaka and more. Tune poke (ahi poke, here) -- Pono Market in Kapa`a (great plate lunches, too). Closed on Sunday. Sushi -- amazingly, the deli at FoodLand! Sushi Blues is getting $$$. Malasadas -- if you can find 'em, good luck. Our malasada lady closed her tent (Ace Hardware, Lihu`e) and makes occasional rare appearances at the Kukui Grove Bakery. When you're here on Kaua`i, check the paper for any fairs or festivals -- there's usually a malasadas booth. Grocery stores -- northshore your only options are Foodland (Princeville), Big Save and Papaya's Natural Foods (Hanalei). We've often found better pricing at FoodLand, than at Safeway... |
auntiem...our fish tacos at Olympic Cafe were not fried fish, but great grilled chunked ahi.

Mahalo for that good news -- we're heading to town around noon, and now I know where we'll be eating lunch today!! \:D/ |
Only 65 more days for us, I really can't wait.
question... what is mahi mahi? someone told me it's dolphin. i cant imagine anyone who would want to eat a dolphin. and what's ahi? i see that alot. |
Dont worry about da lunch, kalunchi:o),
mahi mahi is dolphinfish, not a dolphin. :S- Ahi is yellowfin tuna. |
what is dolphinfish? is it like a dolphin. seriously, that gets me really confused, and my friend too. b/c i know alot of ppl like the mahi mahi, but at the same time, i know ppl wouldnt go and eat a dolphin. so i told my friend it's not literally a dolphin, but she said IT'S A DOLPHIN. so can someone tell me what's a dolphinfish so i can better explain it to my friend. she's going to maui and kauai with me in 65 days, i'd like it for her to try some mahi mahi, but i'll have to convince her that it's not dolphin first.

A dolphinfish is a fish. A dolphin like "Flipper" for example is a mammal, not a fish.:B |
