Kauai Experts Please!!
 

I am planning a trip to Kauai and Maui for next year 2008. We would like to travel sometime between Feb 08 and May 08.

We have been to Mauai previously and enjoyed wonderful weather in Jan., however I have read that Kauai isn't always as predictable especially on the North Shores.

My plan is to rent a house or cottage for one week on Kauai and I would like to stay on the North Shore area (that area of the island really appeals to us) so with that in mind which month would you chose in order to have great beach weather.

Certainly not an expert but most northshore beaches are not swimmable in the winter. I'd opt for later in the season, unless you like sitting on the sand and watching huge surf, which is quite remarkable.

As far as rain - well it is the northshore and will rain anytime of year. One cannot predict how much or how little, just that it will rain. I like the rain.

For me, I'd opt for May, calmer surf, perhaps less rain. And always study ocean safety whatever time of year.

I think the safest bet for good weather would be May.

If your heart is set on enjoying our beautiful northshore beaches, then aim for May -- one of the loveliest weather months on the island. Yes, we get rain...but that's why so many visitors want to see this area. Waterfalls, rainbows, soaring green mountains...sigh...I never tire of the views! 8-)

As for the link which dcd provided, be advised that the building is one of several buildings in that particular condo complex. Clever photography on their website, leads many to believe it's out there all by itself. Nice complex...walk to Princeville Hotel, enjoy wonderful mountain views, and the ocean is just across the street (great for watching sunsets).

We were there in late June. It rained constantly. People do not leave the beach they just sit there. The sun is back out in seconds. It is a gorgeous island, but listent to the people. If this is the island you want looks likey ou will have to wait till May.

My daughter loved her Hanalei rental which was a two bedroom/two bath about three blocks from the beach. It's listed on vrbo.com but it's also on cushniecottages.com

Try checking online with Remax of Kauai. They manage lots of condos and houses at very good rates, many with ocean views (so it doesn't matter if it rains). I've been there in January, and it rained a little every day and all day one day. I've also been there in March and in April with little rain either time. Loved every minute of every trip! Aloha.

if you're going to the beach and not swim, northshore is great any time of the year rain or shine. stay out of the water during the winter months. if you plan to snorkel or swim, there are rip currents even when the surface is calm. may too. unless you go to lydgate (crowded) or kalapaki (ew). just don't go far out period. visitors, locals alike get in trouble every week. be safe, stay near a life guard at all times.

Thanks for your prompt replys. My husband and I will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary in May 08, however we would like to escape the cold Ohio winter so Jan Feb or March timeframe appeals to us.

I'm sure I will have lots of questions during the next couple of months. Lots of things to learn and read about. I have contacted the Kauai visitors bureau and ordered their vacation packet, hopefully that will help. I have been looking at VRBO and several properties look wonderful!!! Planning is so much fun.

We are from the East Coast. (PA) I know what you mean about the cold nasty winters. Have you considered Mexico, or the Caribbean Islands? Jan is a great time to visit there very warm, and the water is swimmable as well. In fact as much as I do love my trip to Hawaii I would be hesitant to give up the Caribbean for a trip there again considering air flying time. The blue Caribbean waters are hard to beat!!
