Kauai/Coconut Coast Traffic - You're Scaring Me!

The last thing I want during my "relaxing" vacation is to be stuck in traffic jams. Would traffic really be that bad in the Coconut Coast area? I'm concerned about the rain in the North Shore -- so I'm eliminating that option.

What area do you suggest I stay in?

No reason to be scared. Part of the reason for the occasional traffic "jams" and bottlenecks, is that our highways are only 2-lane (some have an additional middle lane, but only for left turns). So it doesn't take much, to slow down the cars.

The saving grace is, no matter where the traffic might be slowed, you will still have picture-postcard views to enjoy! 8-)

As for rain, our northshore rains are mostly overnight, 'cept for winter -- when the whole island gets a pounding. There are many, many days when Hanalei and Princeville are dry and sunny...but the east- and south-shores are getting a deluge. And remember -- it's the rain which makes the northshore so lush, green and tropical...the Hawai`i that most visitors come to the islands to see.

We stayed near Kappa during the week of President's Holiday in Feb (high season I understand) and the traffic didn't bother us very often. Only once, I think, did we even notice it. I think the issue gets over-hyped.

No guarantees on Kauai, Bruddah!
You'll have to weigh your own risk/reward tolerance level. It's usually not that bad.

I always found that most of the locals will wave you into traffic so remember to pay it back to others and keep traffic moving.

Give 'em a "Hang Loose".

There was a cane field fire near the airport in Lihue during out last trip, Dec '05/Jan '06, that backed up traffic to almost to Kilauea so go figger'!

Try and hit the roads during off peak hours and use the bypass.

I'd tell you my short cuts but they would cut off my supply of "Bobby's Okole Kickin' Chili Flakes".

It goes really good on my rooster jerkey, sold only at the NaPali Coast Cliff Cafe.

Uh? >

I don't get it.
Kal, you forget. I'm an aging, liberal, democrat, who occasionally needs someone to connect the dots for him.

And you'll remember I'm a Capitalist Extraordinaire!!!

Highest bidder...10% to charity...

Bottom line is sometimes a short cut turns into a long cut!

When/if you do hit traffic...deep breaths...look around...tune into KKCR (when it plays music!) and enjoy.
Took me almost a week to figure out The Sleeping Giant. Finally saw it in a traffic jam.
songdoc...seriuosly, tune into the local radio stations because they will give you an occassional traffic update especially if there is serious trouble.

Kal.....share the secrets or you are no longer the ruler. If you fail to share, I am sure our sistah lou will come thru for us!!

and.......I don't care how much traffic there is on Kauai, I'm gonna make the real icee and his son and the dil go with me next March!

And another thing....I hate to belly ache........but my a/c is broken and they can't come until tomorrow to fix it....and it is 78 inside and outside with about 100% humidity! It has cooled down from 88 and 300% humidity.

Seriously, Songdoc...you will be fine. Where are you staying?

What...do I have a "Blue Bible" tattoo on my eighthead*?

I'm sworn to secrecy by my island sistahs and braghs!!!

BTW....mid 70's.....maybe 20% humdidity and a slight Delta breeze is cooling us off.
Nor Cal is so terrible at times.

* an eighthead is twice the size of a fourhead.

I'2 and Kal,

One word: MAUI

Songdoc, who's is scaring you? We've all been supportive (in our own way). You will be fine. Funny that I saw the sleeping giant the first time while sitting in traffic also! Now I see it everytime I whiz by with the top down and honk. I'd also reconsider your choice of dropping the north shore from your accomdation plans. As auntie said, in the summer most of the rain falls at night, which is lovely to fall asleep to. In 14 days last July/August we lost about two or three hours of beach time because of rain. I think that is GREAT!
Ah well...
