Bug Lady -- the Caribbean has a FAR WORSE problem with Mosquitos than Hawaii ever will! And NO, you don't need netting for your bed, either!! (On Kauai, I have only heard about hikers getting bitten in the deep woods!)

4khansen, I had a previous post stating that I had been bitten by a few mosquitos while walking to a waterfall off the Wailua River. I'm from rural Minnesota where the mosquito is our state bird. I hardly call it a sterile environment. Yes mosquitos, cockroaches and geckos exist on the islands but that doesnt't necessarliy mean every visitor will see one but there is a chance.

Spent 2 weeks on Kauai last summer. There were no mosquitos to speak of (and normally I get bitten a lot). We rented a condo in Poipu and then a condo in Princeville and saw no roaches there at all. We did, however, see a few roaches in our rental car.
