Kauai: best place for vacation rental
Members of our two-generation family (60s and 30s) plan to visit Kauai in Feb., 2015, and rent a vacation home or condo for 5-6 nights. What area of the island would be best, both as a place to stay and as a base for exploring the rest of the island?
Thanks!

Try to consider also in Waikoloa Beach and Mauna Lani. You can find their finest villas and condos in just a reasonable price. Been here, and I would say, they have a great service too! Good luck in your family vacation!

To answer your question about Kauai, at that time of year I would look at the Poipu Beach area where there are a gazillion rentals and you would have a better chance of dry weather. The condos at Kiahuna Plantation are nice and on a lovely beach. There are one and two bedroom units. Check vrbo or homeaway for units rented by owners at reduced rates.
A reputable rental agent on Kauai is http://www.parrishkauai.com They have a lot of home and condo listings in the Poipu area.

We've visited Hawaii most winters for over thirty years, staying two to four weeks on all four major islands. In winter, oceans and weather are usually better south on Kauai, Oahu and to some extent on Maui. (This may be why Alexis is suggesting the Kohala Coast of Big Island -- more sure-fire sunny weather.) A better time to visit Kauai is summer, when the most gorgeous north is not overcast and wet, and you can take air or boat tours around the pali. In winter there are many days you can't see Waimea Canyon for the fog.
The islands have been in drought for a decade, but this past winter got LOTS of rain. Maybe a fluke. Maybe a return to wetter winters.

Check Sondoc's many posts - and as has been my experience - even if a winter storm blows in - it's usually gone in a couple days and then the waterfalls running down the hills/Bali Hai view from Hanlei/Princeville - on the lush/green north shore - are just amazing.

Poipu luxury.com awesome condo right on the rocks over looking the water with a 30 foot lanai. 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms 2400 sq feet. Complex itself is not so great (Makahuena) but this unit couldn't get any closer to the water. Stayed there 3 times and love it love it love it...Also Poipu Shores is very nice 2 bedroom and 2 bath but much smaller lanai...Great pool however.....In the poipu area. Winter, stay in South shore and visit North shore for a day..
