Disagree. There are times when it is calm enough at Queen's Bath but do double/triple check about the local conditions.
And while this report says Lumahai is dangerous - people go there all the time without trouble - but one needs to be aware there can be undertow and be careful on days with swell, etc. Again, check the loccal coditions before you go.

That's because most of them don't go into the water. And if they do, it's almost always only at the east end, where the rock formation creates a nice pool. There's a reason every Kaua'i beach guide you'll find cautions that Lumahai is one of the island's most dangerous.

Been there at least 10 titimes with no problemo, swimming/snorkeling each time - but good to warn people. Others comment also on hoqw good of a time they had there, but uno mas - good to be careful and check local conditions.

We were there in August. One of my great pleasures was trudging out across the wide expanse of sand at Lumahai to watch the rollers come in and crash. It is so exhilirating. We parked ourselves on a little crest near where the stream flows into the ocean. The waves were humungous. There were some crazy local guys boogie boarding right near where the stream comes in. It was quite a show...one to be experienced from the comfort of a beach chair.
After about thirty minutes a family of middle aged parents and two teen girls walked up to where we sitting. They looked like should have been lolling in the waters at the St Regis beach. After looking at the crashing surf and rolling waves for a minute or two, he turned to me, smoldering cigar in mouth and said, "Doesn't look too safe for swimming, does it?" I said, "No, it doesn't." A minute later they walked away and hopefully found calmer waters elsewhere.

Actually - I think this is a pretty good site/page - as it points out how many great beaches Kauai has. Back in '77 during our first trip to Kauai - and our then 67 year young friends (they are from Waimea and the uncle and aunt of a SF friend of ours) - drove us (wore us out really 
)all over the Garden Isle and showed us many tucked away beaches that most travelers don't know about.

How exciting jrossitter! There are some on this and other travel forums that take ocean safety lightly and defend their choice of risk or ignorance as safe.
You are wise to be concerned and take due caution. I've swum in many dangerous waters in the islands. I've swum in the cresent of Lumahai in the dead of summer, but never in the other three seasons. Just this week the north coast of Kauai has had some pretty big swells. Not the big winter surf, just big enough to think foolishly it would be fun.
As a poster above suggested, just because you see locals boogie boarding doesn't mean you should. They have experience. Jumping in to rolling wave conditions not only puts you at risk, but the locals that will try to save you if you get into trouble.
Here are a couple of websites that take ocean safety very seriously. It is good to take it very seriously and not rely on vague and often inaccurate advice.
