Kauai - a few miscellaneous questions
 

Maha'ulepo trail - does it have the red dirt? If so, will bring old (ready to be tossed) sneakers for that.

How dressed up (or not dressed up) do you have to be for the restaurants in the Grand Hyatt? We like very casual places so I'm not talking the most expensive restaurant in the place. Can my husband wear nice shorts with a golf shirt? Me - a pair of capris? On the north shore we are staying at the Hanalei Bay Resort but would like to check out the St. Regis - maybe have a drink or lunch there. We don't normally stay in expensive resorts so don't know what to expect.

What time would you recommend leaving HBR on the day of our flight home? We have a 6:30 p.m. flight on a Thursday?

I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks in advance!

The dress code for men includes grass skirts and coconut bras...

The clothing you described will be fine for the Grand Hyatt and St. Regis restaurants. People dress for dinner in the more upscale restaurants at those resorts -- but not for lunch or drinks.

I think the Maha'uelpu trail is mostly along the beach -- so no red dirt. But I'll confirm that after I do it again in a few days.

Allow a little more than an hour to drive to the airport -- using the bypass -- that time of day on a weekday.

I quit taking any long pants and "dress shoes" to Kauai after '93.

To be safe on the drive to the airport, it never hurts to get there earlier and if too early, allow for some pupus at Feral Pig, Maricahi's, Kalapaki Joe's, Beach Hut, Dani's, etc which are about 5 mins to the airport and rental car drop off.

When I've eaten at Tidepools I usualy wear white cotton slacks with a nice blouse or polo shirt and tennis shoes or sandals.

B girl... I did drive by Niawanda yesterday and I saw a middle aged couple on that stage doing what looked like a really bad Hula... Was that you and Mr Buffalogirl?

garyt22 - yep...you nailed us. We've gone gagooz since we left the city for the burbs.

Hawaiian shirts are very acceptable as are golf shirts but hubby usually has some long pants on. Sandals are fine as well for the restaurants at Grand Hyatt. Maha'ulepo trail has no red dirt. Great walk along the ocean

Yes, but "dressing" in Hawaii is different from most places. For men, khakis and a Hawaiian shirt. For women, capris, skirt or slacks and a nice top and you will fit right in.

Actually depending on how far you go along the Mahaulepu trail, you will run across some red dirt. It's in the area near the stables, which is waaay past the golf course.
We always wear flip flops or Keen sandals - no problemo with red stains.

Just back from a glorious day on the Maha'ulepu trail with the sweetest little doggie from the shelter. There was no red dirt where we walked--just sand and rocks. It's doable with flip-flops, but I feel much safer with sneakers. It was ridiculously beautiful--but very hot -- and there's no shade.

At one point (just past the "sacred" area that's marked) we sat on a rock and watched quite a few sea turtles. I've seen them in that same spot before. Soooo beautiful!

Buffalo Girl. looks like the trip is around the corner. My most favorite place - Kauai - enjoy. Great walk on the Maha'ulepu trail. Incredibly beautiful and the shapes of the rocks and the beauty of the ocean at your feet. Did it finally after 12 trips to Kauai and I am hooked. It will ALWAYS be on my trip planning from now on....
