Aloha to all my HI friends!!

Just back from 2 lovely weeks on the nor shore... ohhhhhh I'm missing mountains, waterfalls and rainbows terribly! I was just floating in Hanalei Bay hours ago!!
I'm listening to a Makana Slack Key CD at my computer... which puts me there in spirit!

Auntiem, I left you a few messages on your cell phone... too bad we weren't able to connect for a glass of wine at sunset.

I have much to share, but just flew in less than 24 hrs. ago, and have an office pulling me in a direction other than fodors and trip reports! Darn!

I'll post something as soon as I can. Aloha for now...

I'm so sorry I missed you! Lost my cellphonoe for over a week -- discovered this Monday that I'd left it at the dentist's office waaaaaaaaay over on the other side of the island. Ack!

Looking forward to reading your trip report, so post soon, 'kay?

makai1, rich has long forgotten about this thread...He has his plans written down for the GTG and his sights are on Kauai!

So, you hurry and get that trip report done.......and post some pics for us to see!

Did you do Kauai and Oahu? And are these the sunrise shells you found on the north shore of Oahu? And who did you have do the crafting and what did you have done?

uploading photos as we speak... more rainbows than I can count!

Bill, I took it real easy today... have done the re-entry enough to know how to stay on "island time".

Rich, have a WONDERFUL time... with 3 weeks you'll have plenty of time to slow down and breathe deep.

icee, yes, yes my shells from north shore O'ahu... that's a story in itself for later. I had the shells "mounted" w/ a sterling setting that enables them to be wired into a necklace... which I plan to bead one and do the other with all of my pukas and shells from O'ahu. The couple that did the mounting live in Hae`na... a couple of artists doing metal sculpture along with other enterprises... they have quite the collection of shells... amazing.

This trip was just north shore Kauai... Princeville and Hanalei our hangout... as Israel Kamakawiwo`ole sings on his E ALA E CD... Hele on to Kauai, Hanalei by the bay...

RichinPA:
There's a north shore event this Saturday night you might want to attend -- a lu`au and concert at the Hanalei Civic Canoe Club (near Hanalei Pier).

The lu`au offered at hotels and at Smith's Tropical Garden, are aimed at visitors. This one, is aimed at the local population...so if you've never had the opportunity before, this will let you experience a "real" lu`au. Tickets are $25, available at the gate or from shops in Hanalei (just keep asking; someone will point you toward the right store). Gates open at 5:30.

Lots and lots of food, lots of great Hawaiian music and dance...wear PLENNY bug spray!

Auntie,
Saturday night sounds like it may be a good time. I normally go to the Dolphin for my first meal..........just a tradition, been doing it since 1984 and I like to see Tommy and some of the old surfers who are waiters there. Love the salad.

But hey, this may be the year for a change.

But if not, see ya Aug 2nd at happy Talk, or call us at the Clifs.........Rich Nuase, 8 building.........3rd floor, come over for a glass of wine at Sunset.

Auntie, By the way, we did get to do a local Luau one year when Auntie Louise from The Tahiti Nui threw one on the 4th of July behind her restaurant. Good food, great people.

I did my one and done Commercial Luau the first year I came to Hawaii on Maui, been there, done that!!

Auntie,

Are those luaus at the pier a regular thing? It sounds great and something that would be fun to do.

Bill,
The luau auntiem is talking about is a special event put on by the Canoe Club in Hanalei... not a regular thing... BUT I will say w/o a doubt you MUST NOT MISS the slack key concert held at the Hanalei Pavillion every Sunday and Friday afternoon... this was an absolute highlight for all of us... don't miss it. More to come in a report soon!

Thanks Makai.
The Pavillion is across the street from our rental, so we'll be there for sure. It's just Friday and Sunday? What time did they start?

Slack Key Concerts by Doug & Sandy McMaster are held Friday @ 4:00pm and
Sunday @ 3:00pm.

I went with my sister early in our time on Kauai... this being her first trip to the islands... we were mesmerized by the history of the music and all of the stories along with the concert.

Later in our trip, she shared that the things she learned from the concert gave her context for the entire trip... she had a real aloha experience. It was sweet.

You'll never listen to slack key in the same way after experiencing this. It's amazing.

iamq:
Just about every canoe club/church/school/halau hula on this island holds annual fundraiser -- sometimes just a concert, sometimes just a hula performance, and (thankfully) sometimes with food, too! <burp> 8-)

This particular canoe club holds a fundraiser lu`au/concert just about this time every year -- raising the $$$ needed to send their keiki (youth) paddlers to the state outrigger canoe club competition which is held every summer.

auntiem,

Tanks for the information. I hope the fundraiser nets lots of money and that the food is...as Kal (where is that bad boy?) would say...onolicious!

Last year we sat on the pier and watched that canoe club (and probably others) paddle out and around the bay and back. It might sound strange, but it had more fun just sitting there, watching them go and come and go and come and...

I'm really looking forward to meeting you and the Mr. on the 2nd!
