We have only stayed at the Marriott in Lihue as we own a timeshare there, it is half hotel rooms and half timeshares although they do rent some timeshare units as well.
We like the place very much, the service is nice and a couple of years ago they refurbished all the units (new paint, wallpaper, beddings, drapes, etc.) Duke's rstaurant is very good, we always have dinner there the first night, also Portofino restaurant is pretty good. Pool snack bar good also. I do not care that much for the main restaurant, although they are supposed to do good Sunday brunch and have a prime rib and king crab leg buffet on Fridays and Saturdays. Frankly for the prices they charge we like Tidepools at the Hyatt much better, Kukuis just does not have much atmosphere, but that is about the only thing we do not care for, however since we do not eat at Kukui's this is kind of a non-issue. I am sure others can help regarding condos and houses.

We've stayed three times at Wailua Bay View Condos in Kapaa. The are small but nicely appointed. We are big hikers, so we appreciated a washer/dryer. And each unit has ocean views. I would not call them luxury condos, they are basic but affordable and the location can't be beat. I did a trip report on our last visit there (Jan. 2006) if you want to click on my name.

Yes, I'm starting to research for a March 2008 trip. We'll be on Kauai 4-5 days and the Big Island 5-6 days. I've been to both islands once about 20 years ago, when I was a teenager so I don't remember much. I have a cousin in Hanalei so that's where we spent most our time and what I remember the most. I think we're leaning towards Poipu because of the time of year, but I'm still considering other areas. Oh, and theres 6 of us: 4 adults; 2 kids. Our budget is average - not cheap but not super luxury either. Thanks in advance!
Jaime - thanks, epecially for the restaurant reviews
John-I haven't looked into Kapaa too much. I'll check out those condos and your trip report. Thanks!

We stayed at the Marriott in Lihue because we had points. It's a nice hotel - if you like to spend time by the pool, it's a great spot; the pool is one of the biggest in Hawaii with fountains, columns, hot tubs, etc. Duke's Restaurant on the property is nice, also nice landscaping and a koi pond where you can feed the fish. There's a beach there, but we went up North to go to the beaches - Ke'e and Tunnels, and we also liked the Poipu area - really good snorkeling there.

We stayed at a wonderful townhouse in the Priceville area two years ago. We worked with a local real estate company.
They know the area you are interested in and can often get you a better deal.
We had a 1300 sq. ft. 3bed/3ba place with a wonderful patio (I can't spell lani ??) Any way we got it for $80. per day because the pool in the complex was still under construction. With the money we saved and the fact that we wanted to be at the beach anyway, was a great deal.

We spent our honeymoon 5 years ago at the Princeville Hotel and really enjoyed it. It was magnificent to watch the surfers from our balcony at breakfast and to shower off in our bathroom with a full length glass window top to bottom overlooking the ocean....it blacks out to the outside world! Wonderful food and service. Close to golf and had a large gym. Loved it!

Hello,
As we have stayed in Princeville Resort, twice it was very pleasent Upstairs, enjoy panoramic views of ocean, fairways, mountains and waterfalls. Walk out on one of two lanais, and enjoy fresh tropical evenings as the sun sets behind Bali Hai across the bay. As we had a good time during our stay and we have been booked it through http://www.springvacationrentals.com, I would like to suggest u to check the site, hope that make u think about. Have a pleasent stay..........

Not really a condo - basically a bedroom, mini-kitchen, and bath - but we stayed at Kauai Calls and would stay there again. It is 15 to 20 minutes outside Lihue. We found it convenient for visiting different parts of the island.

Sorry sancam, but my faves are no longer up for review, as they become so popular as to shut me out. However, I will tell you that I adore staying in Hanalei and walking to the beach and town. I prefer either a beach house or a Princeville condo, or a Poipu condo or villa. I like the freedom of cooking, and space, and I prefer to distance myself from the touristy, been there/done that/over it hotels.
In my life, there have been no bad hawaii decisions and we have stayed the whole gambit of places.
Good luck searching, when you find it you'll know it!
