Katmai bear viewing trips
can any of the bear viewing trips be done with a 4 year old?
Also does anyone know if 2006 Toursaver has coupons for this activity? |
Bokill, please read your answers to your other posts. You got many suggestions for activities with your small children including 4 year old. I am sorry to tell you this but no, no way. Been on several bear watching trips and there is no way that 4 year old could stay in one spot without any movement and making any sound for an extended time or keep up with others when hiking on tundra. Your other kids, 8 and 11, would fully enjoy day spend with bears but not four year old. There are no coupons for bear watching trips and you wont be able to find them for $200 per person. It costs around $450-550 per person. Think about other guests who pay a big money. If I pay for such trip more than $500 per person I want to enjoy it fully without worrying what bears can do if a little child suddenly gets scared or cries. I am certain that your child is well behaved and follows directions but bear wathing trip takes a place in a new and unfamiliar environment. The same would be with taking your child for an all day tour bus in Denali. There are so many more suitable activities for small children. Your child would be happier with more freedom. Short hikes on a tundra or beach are some of those things you could do with your small child. One parent can go on bear watching trip with two older kids and one can do other things with 4 year old. So much to do. I am glad you asked now so you can plan activities for your children before going to Alaska.

thanks for clarifying..
I asked this because some of the folks suggested bear watching as a must do trip and I dont think they realised that we had a 4 year old with us. This realy helps |
bokill, I am one of those folks who suggested bear watching and I knew you have 4 year old.
I wrote "Stay in Homer at least two nights. Bear watching would be a great activity for 8 and 11 year old but your youngest one is too young. You have to remind quiet for an extended period of time, stay with a group, follow directions, stand or sit often without any movements, pee in a designated spot." Further I gave you a list of endless activities in Homer for children. You asked similar question about flights in Talkeetna. Please think of your child and other passangers on a small plane |
i dont think the 1 hour flight would be a problem for the 4 year old,He has flown half way across the world to New Zealand without any problems... plus there is 5 of us so i dont know if we will haven any co passengers?..
How many people fit on those small planes? My question is more on whether a 4 year old is allowed on these flights that go over the mountain ? |
bokill
you read my trip report but I did not bring our 4 years old kid to the bearviewing trip ! She stayed with her mom, who was even not interested in bears ! I understand it would be great to share this wonderful experience among all 5 of you and I would absolutely not miss it but I would suggest you to book 2 consecutive days: 1 parent + 1 older child each day, while the others stay with the 4 years. On top, the costs of the full day is about $ 500 each and the 4 years old would not appreciate it so much as you ! check www.emeraldairservice.com www.baldmountainair.com www.hallobay.com have a memorable trip !!! |
bokill
anyway you can still email them and ask how it would be for a 4 years, if they accept him and if they had already small kids in the past ! baldmountain has 2 planes, 9 + 6 seats total. Emeraldair has one plane, I think similar to the lager plane of baldmountain, hallo bay I do not know. |
bokill, before you decide go to this link and read it very carefully http://www.emeraldairservice.com/safety.htm |
