Kansas City - Red Sox in August
 

4 adults thinking about visiting Kansas City in August to catch a Red Sox game or two. Any suggestions as to lodging, restaurants and other things to do while there?

I used to live in northeastern Kansas and I'm married to a baseball fan - baseball in Kansas City is lots of fun and the ballpark is nice (with waterfalls!). Kansas City was very good to us, but it is hot and humid in August.

We always loved the Country Club Plaza area in Kansas City with nice hotels, good restaurants, excellent shopping . Overland Park and Olathe are very nice suburbs as alternatives. The ribs are great in Kansas City, too. You will want to rent a car because the ballpark is out of town from Overland Park, Olathe and downtown. Check out Independence, MO (Harry Truman) and Abilene, KS (Dwight Eisenhower). The Flint Hills, west of Topeka towards Manhattan are beautiful, but a longer day trip. Abilene is about 3.5 hours from Kansas City and the Flint Hills are about 2.5 hours.

Stay on the Plaza, eat BBQ at LC's, on the way or after the game. Eat Chicken at Strouds'.
BBQ at Fiorella's . Italian at Lidia's.
Steaks at Plaza III. Nelson Gallery, Negro Leauges Museum, Jazz Museum.

We stayed out near the ballpark, we walked across a bridge to get there. We took shuttles back to K.C. proper and never rented a car.

K.C. is a GREAT baseball town, we had a marvelous time. Overall, I think they were the most friendly fans we have come across. We were invited to eat dinner with people we meet at the ball park. St. Louis is close but I'd stay K.C. was first, in our experience. And it was 98 degrees out, and barely went down in temp. overnight, the entire 3 days we were there.

As JJ5 mentioned, there are hotels right by the ball park, but they aren't particularly handy to anything else.
