Kansas City for a weekend?
Any recommendations for things to do, places to stay and restaurants in KCMO? I lived in Leavenworth (the army base, not the prison!) for a few months in 2000, and recall the downtown being fun. I remember good shopping (Country Club plaza?) and something fun to do at the Hallmark Center? Also remember a fabulous steak house (from the pre-Outback era), but can't remember the name. It was popular, but not "stuffy", had a family atmosphere. I went to a large art museum there, too, but cannot remember the name- began with a w?
I'm sure things have changed in five years- be glad to hear your suggestions!

Suggestions (less stuffy spots):
Plaza:
Cheesecake Factory
Kona Grill
Westport (Bars / drinking)
Museaums
Kemper (modern art)
Nelson Atkins (most likely the big one you mention)
BBQ
Bryants (the one on Brooklyn)
Gates
Union Station (by Hallmark / Crown Center)
Casinos (I prefer the Argosy but...)
Enjoy!

I haven't been to KC since I was a teenager, but I really liked it when we went for long weekends. My dad was in the AF at SAC in Omaha so we'd go a couple times a year.
Here are some things that we liked to do:
-Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun amusement parks
-KC Masterpiece Restaurant for the best barbecue and baked beans
-They have a good shopping area that's downtown, but I can't remember the name of it
-We would usually stay at I believe the Marriott Courtyard in Overland Park, which is one of the nicer suburbs of KC
Have fun in KC! I have good memories of the city, and especially of the people there because they were always so friendly.

Was the steak house you remember the Golden Ox? It is right next to Kemper arena and where the old stockyards were.
For a steak in an interesting old setting, try the Savoy Restaurant Located in the 100+ year old Savoy Hotel, it is a good place for steaks and seafood. Request booth #4, it was where Bess & Harry Truman ate. Despite those things, I haven't found it stuffy.
For totally different food and atmosphere, let me second the recomendation for Arthur Bryant's' BBQ.
The art museum you remember is probably the Nelson-Atkings, just east of the Country Club Plaza. It is KC's one world class museum.
One of the biggest changes in the last few years has been the growth of the Crossroads District - just north of Union Station and Crown Center. http://www.crossroadscommunityassociation.org/
That area has several good restaurants in one of the old freight houes, and many growing art galleries. The best time to visit there is the first Friday of the month when they all stay open late and have additional entertainment.
The reopened Union Station has been mostly a disapointment, but has a couple of good restaurants. It is connected by walkway to Crown Center.
The Steamboat Arabia Museum in the City Market was here when you were in the area before, but if you never visited it, you have missed something special.
You might also like the side by side American Jazz Museum and Negro League's Hall of Fame at 18th & Vine. IThey are only a few blocks from the original Arthur Bryant's.
Are you spending some time in Leavenworth? I have been hearing good things about High Noon Saloon restaurant & microbrewery. http://www.thehighnoon.com/ and plan on visiting it soon.

I lived in KC many years ago and visited last summer. I really enjoyed eating at Stroud's and Ponaks and we also grabbed a burger at Winstead's.
Things to do: Stroll along the Plaza, shop or party in Westport, Crown Center used to have fun shopping, the Nelson Atkins Museum and surrounding Henry Moore sculpture garden. There is a Negro Baseball Leagues Museum downtown. KC has a deep jazz tradition and there are surely museums/clubs to visit. The Royals will be playing soon and should be an easy ticket. We also used to have a lot of fun leaving the city and driving around little towns like Parkville along the river and having picnics and just exploring.

Thanks for the good info. Keith, about the High Noon Saloon in Leavenworth: it was (for me) the best reason to live in Leavenworth! Great microbrews and the food was good, too. The chicken-fried chicken was my favorite. Great atmosphere, too. Thanks for the website- glad to know they are still up and running. I will definitely make it part of my trip!
