Kansas City BBQ

We will be staying in Kansas City, MS over the 4th of July weekend. Can anyone recommend the best place to go for BBQ, or any other really good restaurants? Thanks.

Bryants BBQ is considered one of the best- its a little hole in the wall but several US presidents have eaten there.
Gates BBQ is also good and has several locations so easier to find than Bryants. Gates has a restaurant on the Plaza- one of my favourites on the menu is "burned ends"

Check into Stephenson's Apple Farm Restaurant. It's at the intersection of Highway 40 and Lees Summit Rd. (I think that's right.) Been open since the 1940's, I believe, and Presidents have eaten there, too. They have awesome smoked pork chops. Also some pretty tasty homemade apple fritters, apple butter, apple cider (you get the idea).

If you want to go to a chain I would suggest the KC Masterpiece. There is a great chicken place in KC too but I can't remember the name...Stuart's maybe, somebody help me out...it is quite the place.

First a small point, it is Kanas City, MO not MS.

Several popular bbq joints, each with their own loyal followers.

Bryants originl on east side and now has a branch in one of the local casinos. No longer owned by original Bryant and thus not as authentic or as good IMO.

Gates is popular and has stores all over. Pretty good.

Jacks Stack is very popular with branches in a couple locations. One of my favorites.

Oklahoma Joes is extremely popular, located (really) inside a gas station. One of my favorites.

The chicken joint is Strouds famous for pan fried chicken and all the fixins. Come hungry - popular place with "big" people if you get my drift. It is good if you like that kind of heavy food.

Masterpiece BBQ is also very good and very popular. Locations in several spots.

Great steaks at Hereford House.

Great dining at any of the PB&J places, such as YiaYias, Yahoos, Grand Street Cafe. All most excellent.

40 Sardines is excellent.

American Restuarant in Crown Center is famous far and near....pricey top flight cuisine.

Peppercorn Duck Club in Hyatt at Crown Center is consistently good. Also expensive.

Lots of good Mexican food available on west side on Southwest Blvd. Some of it is authentic some more TexMex type.

Sunset Grill in Overland Park is a island themed local place and is excellent. We go often.

Expensive steaks at Plaza III on the Country Club Plaza. Be ready to spend lots of $$$$ here.

Of course, all the normal chains are here as well.

Where are you staying while in the area? That may dictate the best places to go.

Lauralee, do tell us where in the area you will be staying, it will help narrow down a restaurant. My favorites are KC Masterpiece & Jacks Stack, Haywards in Overland Park is also pretty good, not mentioned yet I don't think.

Lots of choices...

Thanks curt, I was just in KC last week & we joked about Stroud's but didn't make it there this trip. Thanks again, I was about to go nuts.

For fresh fries cooked in lard and large quantities of food - Bryants

For meat with smoked flavor and a sauce with no preservatives - Winslow's Smoke House.

For wings - Santa Fe BBQ (but not the one in Olathe)

For ribs & sauce - Rosedale BBQ

For upscale atmosphere - Fiorella's Jack Stack barbecue

For downscale atmosphere - Bryants

For sweet potato fries - Jake Edwards BBQ.

If you are going to do just one and want to feel you have had real KC BBQ, I recommend Bryant's original location at Brooklyn and Santa Fe.

I second the original Bryants - I took my relatives from canada and they were quite impressed- I encouraged them to buy just a 1/2 sandwich but they wouldnt listen and of course could not begin to eat it all - its a unique experience.

Hey Kansas city folks- is there still a Rubys soul food restaurant in KC?

Keith Jun 3rd, 2005 06:38 AM

Opps, that should have been Brooklyn and 18th Street.

Rubys is gone. My best recomendation for soul food is the Peach Tree Buffet. The same folks also have an upscale restaurant (The Peach tree Restaurant) at 18th & Vine, but I think the buffet is more likely to please you.

We are staying in the country club plaza area, at the Hampton Inn and Suites. Thanks for all your help with restaurants. I know there are lots of chain type restaurants in that area, but we'd be willing to drive some for a great dining experience. We will have our three teenage sons with us so BBQ, steak, Italian restaurants are probably the best choice. Thanks for any further ideas.
