Kanab - Best Friends Sanctuary

I'm a bit irritated with myself for not remembering when I was in the area last week, but had the aha! moment when I read today's article in USAToday. For those who are interested, the largest no-kill animal shelter is based 5 miles north on Kanab. They offer tours, volunteer opportunities and internships. It was on my mental "to-do" list - and I forgot.

Here's some info for those planning a trip to Arches, Zion, etc. who may be interested.

Great reminder, Starrsville. I have belonged to Best Friends for several years and look forward to visiting the sanctuary one day. They do some very good work.

Another long time member of Best Friends. That was a great article in yesterday's USA Today.

I'm hoping to visit the sanctuary next year - has anyone been there?

We have this on our itinerary for our spring break trip next year. I'm also curious to hear from people who've been there.

BUMP to find out if anyone has visited Best Friends. We are thinking of tagging this on to our spring training/grand canyon trip as it has been a longtime dream of mine to visit this place. We'd fly into Phoenix and then out of Las Vegas, since LAS is the closest airport to Kanab.

I have a friend who spend a few weeks volunteering there, a couple of times a year. What did you want to know?

Can you ask where they stay when they go volunteer? I'd imagine if he/she is there for several weeks at a time, they probably stay somewhere within the sanctuary.

We did visit Best Friends on our spring break trip to Utah several years ago – it was an interesting tour. The kennels are designed in hexagonal shapes so the dogs can still see each other, even though they are separated. It was details like this that made the place unique and interesting. We visited the dog and cat areas from what I recall. It’s worth a stop. On the way to some of the areas, you drive along dirt roads that were used in some Western movies.

They go with an RV.

Have you tried the website? Lots of info there.
