Kalalau Trail

I'm interested in opinions of hiking the short two mile hike - is all the best scenery
beyond this point?

The first 2 miles are worth it - it's a little steep but you get a spectacular view of the Na Pali coast and it ends at a pretty beach. Bring water!
We continued past this for another 2 miles thru jungle-type terrain to a gorgeous waterfall. It got pretty challenging (muddy, rocky) after the beach. Wear socks that you are willing to throw away since they'll get stained with mud (hiking boots are recommended). Go early since there isn't a lot of parking at the trail head.

You should definitely do this hike! The pictures of the NaPali that you'd see on postcards can't be seen from this trail (probably taken by boat or plane), but the views are wonderful, nonetheless. I couldn't believe what a beautiful trail this was, so lush and green!
I also went to the waterfall and also stress bringing lots of water. It gets hot after noon and you'll need it on the return. Also be careful swimming at the beach; someone drowned there the day I was there! The waves are mighty strong!

Was a highlight of an 11 day trip to Kauai and Maui. The best view is actually at the 0.5 mile point but it is worth doing the full 2 miles to the beach. Where clothing that you don't care about because it can be muddy. Pack a towel for after the swim.

My wife an I have made the hike to Hanakapiai Beach twice.

Definiteley take plenty of water...it can get very hot and the fresh water stream coming down the mountain is not safe to drink unless treated. Many people use walking sticks to make the uneven walk much easier. We travel with collapsable walking sticks. Hiking boots are a plus but not necessary. Some people make the hike barefoot.

I kept my mud stained socks. Whenever I wear them, I think of the hike.
