Kaanapali Villas vs. Maui Kai question
 

I've received some similar rates for these two properties and have a question since we've never been to Maui.

My wife and I prefer to be within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, etc. Is the boardwalk in Kaanapali within walking distance from either of these properties?

While we would prefer an ocean view, it isn't essential. We prefer proximity and room quality (clean, ammenities) over the view.

Thanks for the reply. The maps are great and it LOOKS like there are a lot of things within walking distance from the Kaanapali Villas. However, there isn't a scale on the map so I'm not sure. Anyone know if this is true?

Also, what about the Sugar Cane train. Is this just a quick hop on/off train used to get around Kaanapali?

the sugar cane train is a tour-----we did it and it was ok----if you don't do it you really aren't missing anything!

Kaanapoli Villas has a much better beach and grounds. Many of the rooms are set quite a ways back tho so ocean view may be just a glimpse.

The Sugar Cane Train is not a hop on and off thing - it's rather a tourist trap kind of ride. If you have kids with you they might enjoy it, otherwise skip it.

I also received a similar rate from Maui Eldorado "F" building. So it appears this is in the mix as well.

Any opinions between the Maui Eldorado, Maui Kai, and Kaanapali Villas?

I stayed at the Villas a few years back. Very tranquil, peaceful and low key, which isn't really my style, but I loved it there. I think it has the best beach (in Kaanapali) on property front. I liked that it was at the very end of the walking path and around the bend from the major hotels, so action is a stone's throw away. Each condo is individually owned so decor varies. We were extremely pleased with ours. It had all the convenient amenities (kitchen, laundry, etc.). We stayed in the 2 story Villas, not the high rise. We ate breakfast daily and had drinks/appetizers on the lanai daily with the ocean right in view.

I'm not familiar with the other properties you mentioned, but I'm a discriminating traveler, and I'd go back to the Villas.

The Kaanapali Villas is at the north end of the Kaanapali walkway and is walkable to the shopping and restaurants, though somewhat farther than the other hotels. Maui Eldorado is located along the golf course and away from the beachfront but still walkable. If you are not planning to rent a car, you would be able to catch the trolly bus from Whalers Village to get to Lahaina Town and back. Maui Kai is actually located in Honokowai and not within the Kaanapali Resort. You would need a car if staying there.
