Just got Back from Homer-Seward
 

Just spent the most perfect week in Alaska i could have imagined. if anyone needs help with loging,restuarant,hikes,trips on water , fishing etc let me know. I'm wating for my fish delivery today . Its expensive to ship but well worth it

Hi Rongolf - I just posted a reply to you in another message. I'm taking a very similar trip at the end of August/early Sept. For the Seward portion, I'm staying at Angel's Rest, in the Wing Cabin. And I booked a full-day fishing/ sightseeing combo with Alaska Saltwater. Seems like a great way to end my trip to Alaska! Please tell all - restaurants, activities, etc!

rongolf - Please tell all! We'll be in Homer for 4 days at the end of the month. Did you take the trip to Halibut Cove? All day or half day fishing charter? Did you happen to eat at Fat Olive's?
Good place to hike without a guide?

klmeyer - Just FYI - My husband took the fishing trip with Alaska Saltwater Lodge last year and had a great time.

Not rongolf, but we just returned from our Alaska trip and I highly recommend Fat Olive's. We also ate at the Homestead, and it was excellent too.

The Saltwater Lodge Wildlife and Glacier cruise was probably the best part of our trip.

ok I'll try and get to everyone so here goes. We drove from Anchorage airport to Homer at night and got there in 4 hrs. without stoping.Stayed at a a great B and B called a Room with a view. Great people great view of the spit and great breakfast. Manfred is a avid hunter and has his tropies all over the place. And the best thing is the price 115 a nite. Didn't eat at Olives but we did eat at Cups which was great and highly recommended as the beast in Homer by the innkeepers as well as people we met on our fishing trip. We fished for hallibut one day and came away with 3(2 people)Acg. weight 35 lbs, very good boat Northern Fishing Charters. I highly recommend u stick with the 6 pack boats.We did the Bear viewing and got to see about 9 bears eating on a whale washed up. The pilot told us this was a once in lifetime viewing because it rarely happens. If the whale wasnt there I honestly don't think the day would be that successful. I have awesome pictures. Tons of bals eagles on the spit some women feeds them supposedly over 300.Moose all over Homer be careful driving.Didn't get to hike in Homer as we drove to Seward great stopping places along the way especially by the Kenai river I felt like I was in Paradise the river is awesome. We took our time getting to seward and it was great stopping along the way. Homer we stayed at Angels Rest in there new Herron View cabin . We didn't even see Owners in 4 days they writew your name on a chalkboard and thats it . I ddin't get the friendly meeting with them as u do in their emails. They do not make up your rooms and of course no band b but they do have cooking equip if your doing that. We fished on Alaska trip and this was good again I had a 6 pack boat combo fishing but Salmon weren't available yet so we only did Hallibut yet I paid for both and have requested money back so far no response. Remember to ask whose boat are u fishing on as it appeared to me they acted more like a broker because the day we ment them they handed us off to another guy. They probably work off commission and they don't have there own small boats. Get this I caught a 94 lb hallibut awesome.We also caught a 35 lb. The cost of shipping is A$6.00 per lb so be prepared to spend the money. Fish arrived prefectly and on the days I specified.The Alaska glacier viewing was the best. Nate and Matt were our captains and we did the 9 hr all day thing and I recommend this because its along way to the glaciers . We saw everything Oracs(even breeching) hunpbacks, dolhins, Black beares, mtn goats, seals and eagles not to mention puffins and other birds. But the Oracs were special we ran into a pod of 5 or 6 and it was great to say the least.Hiking appeared better to me in Seward than homer but I didn't research homer that much but given the layout of both places I think seward looked better and we hiked a place called LOST LAKE about 7 miles out of Seward. Its a 7 mile hike not terribly difficult but we ran into too much snow at the halfway mark and stopped a camping ground. Snaow probably will be gone in July. We also saw the exit glacier . Didn't hike in this area because of the snow. Drove back to Anchorage hoping to stop off at places but potter marsh viewing was closed and we didn't do tram . I must sday though scenery of mts was nice but I preferred drive from homer to seward especially around the Kenai river. I'll post restuarants next msg. have fun to all for this trip I bought a new pair of binnoculars amd a new digital cannon eos rebel xti camera with special zoom lens 75-300 and I'm glad i did. really need a good zoom to get GREAT pictures

BY the way I don't recommend a sighseeing -fishing combo u should do separately. u won't get to see all that way. Its worth the moeny to do separately. The only things we saw while fishing was seals and a bald eagle.

Full day fishing no hallibut cove ferry I really think u need full day fishing because trip to best stops takes a while and hallibut take time to catch

My wife and I will be going to Kenai during the early part of June ('09). The Lands End Resort looks interesting, but being at the end of the spit...is that too far from the town to enjoy Homer? Is there a better place to stay in town?

Land's End resort is just a few miles from Homer.. within five minutes. enjoy!

If you have a car nothing is too far in Homer. There are hundreds places to stay in Homer.

New Places----I realize there are 100's of places to stay. That is why I am asking for any references or testimonials about any favorite places.

We ended up staying at this B&B downtown, not on the spit, and thought it was pretty nice.

Lots to see and do in Homer, but my favorite place to stay on the Kenai was really in Cooper Landing, on the way to Homer from Anchorage at the Kenai Princess Lodge. Loved it.

I will be in Homer the beginning of Sept. One of my missions is to see moose. Can you tell me where you saw them? Thanks :)
