Just forget Big Sur for a while (Spring 2024)

A section of Hwy. 1 north of Big Sur has fallen into the ocean, and the southbound lane is indefinitely closed to the general public. The northbound lane is open to authorized vehicles only.

South of Big Sur, the highway remains closed from just north of Lucia.

More rain is in the forecast, so there could be more storm damage in the coming days/weeks. Repairs will take months.

They're talking about installing one way traffic control at Rocky Creek https://www.montereycountyweekly.com...-source=mosaic

The southern side is looking like at least another 4 months.

I’m glad I was able to go in Oct 22. It’s such a gorgeous spot. I feel badly for everyone that depends on that economy.

Thank you for the update. I was looking at Big Sur as a destination this May or July for our annual mother/daughter vacay!

Jean Apr 9th, 2024 07:49 PM

Well, you could check back re July, but I wouldn't buy any nonrefundable air tickets.

Sorry!

Madam397 Apr 10th, 2024 11:52 AM

I wouldn't plan on July for this year. Construction always takes longer than you expect and we still have the entire rainy season ahead of us.

Jean Apr 11th, 2024 08:21 AM

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but for July I think it would be worth checking on access from the south. Caltrans had hoped to reopen the road at Lucia by "late spring" and at Dolan Point by "May 1." But, yes, although winter storms are hopefully behind us, there could still be more rain...

Patty Apr 11th, 2024 01:33 PM

There's a third slide between Lucia and Dolan that will take longer than the other two so I'm not optimistic for July from the south. On the north side at Rocky Creek, they're working to stabilize the edge and then they can install a traffic light. Hopefully there will be a time estimate later this week.

Patty Apr 12th, 2024 01:24 PM

Estimate for the completion of the stabilization work required at Rocky Creek is Memorial Day.

Patty Apr 12th, 2024 05:00 PM

For Regent's slide in the south the estimate is early fall.

Jean Apr 13th, 2024 08:16 AM

Patty, thanks for the updates... Now, fingers crossed there isn't any more damage this year.

Vttraveler Apr 14th, 2024 04:18 AM

Thanks for the detailed information about this.
I just found out that we have to travel to Palo Alto this summer and was looking at other places to spend time. Although I love the Pacific coast, I won't try to fit in Highway 1 on this trip

Patty May 14th, 2024 03:14 PM

Hwy 1 at Rocky Creek is reopening one week ahead of schedule this Friday May 17th. There will be a traffic light for one way alternating traffic.

Thank you for the update!

AustinTraveler May 28th, 2024 07:31 AM

They are predicting a late Fall opening of Highway 1.

Jean Oct 2nd, 2024 06:53 AM

Highway 1 will not be fully open between Cambria and Carmel until 2025... at the earliest.

Continued land movement is keeping a 7-mile section north of Lucia closed as repairs continue.
