Here is a low cost option for those on a budget visiting New York. A number of visitors have opted for hotels on the Jersey side - necessitating a river crossing every time you go into the city or return A very doable option is the Comfort Inn in Long Island City in Queens. It is one block from the Queensboro Plaza subway station and a 10 minute ride into midtown. They show room rates slightly above $100. BTW - there are some first rate restaurants in that area.

Stay away from the center. You're going during one of the busiest tourism times so prices sky rocket well in advance. Try the Millennium Hilton downtown or go to the Upper West Side. Lucerne, Marrakesh, Bellenord, etc. Go to the smaller boutiques. I'd also try Distrikt on 40th and 9th. Really top notch property. If they have availability, you won't be sorry.

If you see a hotel on Expedia, pick up the phone and call the hotel directly. Expedia will offer a lower rate but the hotel pays them 25% fee for bringing the booking. If you negotiate with the hotel directly you can often pay less for the room than the expedia rate because they get to keep all your funds. Offer to pre-pay upfront as well.

Have fun!

Actually summer holiday weekends like Memorial Day are often good times to find hotel deals. You can do far better than the Marrakesh which is not a lawful hotel. You can get an AAA rate of $195/night plus tax at the very charming Desmond Tutu Center in Chelsea or pay $175/night plus tax if you prepay. By booking something cancelable, you might find something nicer on travelzoo.com closer to the trip. New offers usually appear on Tuesdays and this Tues. should be a prime time to see specials for your dates.
