I think you are stunned by your experience at Momma's Rachel because you are from NYC. I have had the same experience when I eat outside of the city. Don't get me wrong I love many restaurants in Hawaii but I do think that since restaurants are so competitive with each other here, standards are higher than the average restaurant anywhere else. I tend to think this is also the case in San Francisco. There is one restaurant people rave about on here, Beachhouse on Kauai. I have poured over the menu but it looks so mundane in what it offers. Roy's in NY has more interesting offers.

Sad that girl was so excited over a $13 tip everyone else is probably giving her 5 bucks in that sun.

Just wanted to second Rachel's recommendation to buy the "Maul Revealed" book and to skip buying the Road to Hana cassette. I've heard people say the drive wasn't worth it but I have no idea how anyone could think that. Rent a jeep and continue past Hana to Highway 31. A bit of a rough drive but there are some incredible views from this side of the island that make it worthwhile. Also, the Pipiwai Trail hike near O'heo Gulch is a must if you like hiking, waterfalls and/or bamboo forests. As for Mama's, I didn't go because the stories I've heard are it's either very very good or very very bad, which the messages here seem to indicate as well. Thanks for the trip report, Rachel. It brought back some wonderful memories from my trip to Maui last year.

skip the cassette? I have done the road to Hana 3 times and I think it is only enjoyable when you know where to stop off find a patch of bamboo, heliconia take a short walk. Without the tape you don't know where to stop

I wasn't saying to make the drive without anything. I said buy the book and skip the cassette (or buy the book INSTEAD of the cassette if that makes more sense). I got way more out of the book than the cassette, both for the Hana drive and other activities around the island.

I walked through the 4-Seasons on Maui yesterday, it was stunning. It was very early in the AM, so the pool area was deserted.

I have been to Mama's,there I was stunned not by the scenery but by the prices! C'mon, we had 3 appetizers and 3 drinks for lunch and it was $100!

A day trip to the Big Island is do-able and fabulous. Especially in a brand new convertible!

Nice report! I just came back from a quick business type trip to Maui and wish I could have stayed longer.

Hi Everyone! I'm going to be on Maui next month and I'm so glad to read all the postings. I may even spend the night in Hana if I don't try to make it all the way around!

Regarding Mama's Fish House, last year when I was on Maui for a month, I heard both good and bad reviews of it (though I never went). The place I always enjoy is Jaque's, in Pai'ia. Y'all should try that! I'm looking forward to eating there a couple of times during my 2 week adventure.

Aloha~

I remembr reading on this discussion board a couple of months ago that no bags or purses are allowed in the USS Arizona. Is this regulation still in force?

Yes, this regulation still stands...no bags, purses (even fanny packs) of any kind are allowed in. Cameras, but no cases....etc. As soon as you pull into the lot, there are large signs everywhere posting this, so you won't forget.

Just back from 4S Maui, 10 days. Don't even bother with the pool, the beach is awesome. Those silly movie stars get all the best cabanas anyway. Don't miss the snorkeling behind 4S, WAY better than molokini, and they give you free snorkel stuff to use. FYI - 4S also has free child care. I was on my honeymoon and have no kids, so I couldn't care less. But the kids in "daycare" looked like they were having a blast.
