just back from Italy, part one, getting to Milan the hard way. A sign of things to come?

This time we were organized. I mean, really organized. Packing done days before, hotels lined up with directions and importantly, plenty of time for connections. Or so we thought. We gave ourselves 3 hours for our connection at JFK to Milan - should be enough since both flights were in the same wing of the same terminal.

Good thing we had the airline number on our cell phone quick dial. So, after boarding our flight to JFK that was already more than an hour and a half late, I used that number as we sat on the runway with a few thousand planes (or so it seemed)before us for take off. The estimated take off time pushed back another minimum 45 minutes. It was obvious we would not make our connection so I called the airline from the plane as we waited since we were told we could still use cell phones for a while to see if we could get rerouted. Yes we could, only the flight was not to Milan, but to Heathrow and would leave later that night. From there, we would board a flight to Milan. The difference in timing would cost us about 10 hours more in transit, or to put it in tourist terms, all of the daylight hours of our first day. Well, at least there would be plenty of time for our luggage to be rerouted.

Landing at JFK, we passed the now empty waiting area of what would have been our Milan flight and got re-ticketed, having to leave the terminal's security area. We checked our luggage rerouting and were assured that the change was being made as we spoke. There WAS plenty of time. After enjoying going through security once again we had dinner of sorts at JFK we boarded our London flight, easily made our connection several hours after reaching Heathrow to Milan and arrived in Milan after dark. Except, our luggage did not. The nice lady at baggage claim gave us both a kit with some necessaries that included a one size fits all tee shirt, make that xxl. I used it as a tee shirt the next day and DW used it as a night gown after reaching Verona that night.

Our bright spot was an excellent late dinner at a restaurant directly opposite our home for the next four nights, the Hotel Torcolo.

Next, B'stoke and Giuliette do Verona with a shopping spree for undies and an visit to the Pronto Sorcoso.
