We are going to Canyon de Chelly and I just saw a show to Mesa Verde. Is that in Arizona? How close is it to Caynon de Chelly? We're aslo going to the Hopi Mesas. Is that close? Any recommendations? Hotel? Resturants? Did you go anywhere else in Arizona?

Did you stay overnight at Canyon De Chelly and if so, where?
Did you take a tour, and if so, which one did you take?

At canyon de chelly (chinle, Arizona), I stayed at thunderbird lodge and then the holiday inn. They are both convenient--but the holiday inn was nicer and had a pool. I really enjoyed hiking down to the white house ruin. (I did not take a tour there and I think it would be a mistake--the hike was wonderful.)

Monument valley was amazing--the only place to stay is goulding's lodge, all the rooms have balconys which give you a great view of the valley. I did take a jeep tour of the valley--it's the only way to see part of the valley where the roads are terrible. Another option is to ride a horse around. monument valley is about 1 1/2 hours north of chinle.

mesa verde is about 2 hours north east of monument valley in colorado. the best place to stay is far view lodge--the rooms have balconys that again permit a great view. you can walk down to a number of ruins--depending upon your fear of heights and physical condition. But you can see a number of ruins without hiking down.

Mesa Verde is in Colorado. It is about 150 miles to CAnyon de Chelly. The Far View Ldge is in the park at Mesa Verde. To get to the ruins on the range guided tours requires climbing into and out of the ruins on ladders. . The nearest town is Cortez - lots of motels. Truck tours are offered at the Thunderbird Lodge at CAnyon de Chelly. Options are hiring a Native American guide to tour the valley, do it on horseback or walk the trail to the White House ruins. The Park Service may offer a ranger guided tour to the White House ruins. Did both - the ranger guided tour was more insteresting and it takes a different route. The White House ruins pale in comparison to the ruins at Mesa Verde but the CAnyon itself is quite interesting. Monument Valley is well worth visiting - it is less than 100 miles to Canyon de Chelly..
