yk, that's funny - it's definitely just what you're used to or what you grow up with. My New York friends said that up there strangers who say hi to you are probably crazy or are going to ask you for money.
Another things I noticed about Boston - it seemed very safe. There was no time, even late at night, where we didn't feel safe. There were always people around, and we saw a lot of women walking alone late at night, which I wouldn't feel comfortable doing in a lot of other places. So kudos to Boston. |
Wednesday, we got up early to head over to Nantucket. We stayed at a place called the Martin House Inn, they have a deal with Cape Air to get a reduced price on airfare. Since we had such a short timeframe, we decided to fly rather than drive to Hyannis and catch the ferry. It was a quick and easy flight on a very small plane. They ask your weight so they can arrange you properly. Took about 45 minutes to get to Nantucket, and we took a taxi to the B&B. The island is really beautiful - seemed like a great time to go because it wasn't crowded, the weather was nice, and the flowers were still in bloom.
We went to lunch at Black-Eyed Susan's - they serve a breakfast menu until 1:00, which my husband loved. He had pecan encrusted French toast with Jack Daniels butter, and I had eggs Benedict - vegetables have been few and far between on this trip! We did some shopping - most of the things were out of our price range, but we did find a few little things. Major sticker shock here - a cute little charm bracelet was $2,200, but it was still fun to look! We walked to Jetties beach, and there were only 2 other people there - too cold to get in the water, but we took pictures - very pretty. Lots of seaweed though. After that, we went sailing on the Endeavor; this was a great tour, which I would highly recommend. It leaves out of Straight Wharf, and they offer several tours a day. They range in price from $25-$35 and are well worth it. Captain Jim built the boat himself and has been sailing for years; he gave us a great tour - even saw a seal, cormorants, lighthouses, etc. You can brings snacks and a bottle of wine on board. This was our favorite part of Nantucket. Fog enveloped the island, and it looked really neat - just like I always imagined Nantucket to be. After that, we decided to go to the Even Keel Cafe for dinner - most of the spots on Nantucket are pretty upscale and gourmetish, but we were pretty windswept from the sailing so just went casual. The cafe had great food - we had lobster nachos and a crispy encrusted cod served with mashed potatoes and steamed carrots and zucchini - vegetables, we missed you! The B&B was comfortable - cozy Ralph Lauren sheets and terrific baked goods and fresh fruit in the morning. One thing was kind of a bummer though; they sold me on this one room because it had a fireplace, and I thought it would be romantic. It was really chilly when we got back from dinner, so we asked for firewood, and they told us they didn't have any. They said they normally use Duraflame logs, but they didn't have any of those either. So no fireplace for us. One thing we noticed is that most of the people in the service industry on Nantucket either have Jamaican or Eastern European accents. I asked a local about it, and he said they are sponsored to come over and work for 6 months during the busy season. I thought that was so strange, but he pointed at a huge mansion on the beach and said, "If your dad lives there, are you going to be working as a chambermaid?" Well, true enough I guess, but still seems strange to us. Our room had its own private porch, so we had breakfast out there before departing - really delicious blueberry scones and other baked goods that seemed homemade. Nice to have one little last relaxed moment before heading back to real life. The B&B is in a good spot - easy to walk everywhere from there. We flew back to Boston on Cape Air again - since they arranged us by weight, my husband and I didn't even get to sit together. They put me on this tiny bench with another woman who was a nervous flyer but very sweet. I told her we'd arrive in one piece, and we did! Then back to Houston on Continental - hope to return someday to Boston. It's a great town with wondeful people. Thank you again for helping us plan our trip! |
This is a great report--I love Boston--I am from California and I had never seen a building more than 70 years old....fell in love with some of the buildings at Harvard..
Glad you had such a good time.. traveler, I LIVE in a house that's 100 years old in California! |
LOL, my new england bungalow was built 1893.
Fantastic report volcanogirl! You really filtered thru so many suggestions and made a perfect getaway, fitting in Nantucket by plane was a great topper! Yaaaaaaay! You too think Fenway and the Green Wall is a keeper! Wooooooo hoooooo. One more vote for our Save Fenway team! Now aren't there some other people with a trip report due???? Mahalo for loving my city and seeing it WELL!!! I find myself dissappointed when people fail to GET it!!!!! |
Outstanding Trip Report volcanogirl!
On the T, I guess I was more frustrated since I only wanted to go a short ride and had to change 4 times.. Love Boston and can't wait to go back! |

Aloha kealalani..

Good healing to you!!!!
|
Many mahalo's and thank you! |
Ah, Tahiti - that would be frustrating. We were able to do the green and blue lines everywhere we wanted to go. Seems like we always ended up at Government Center - which we were pronouncing Guhvamunt Centah by the end of our trip! Hope you are feeling better soon.
I'm craving Legal Sea Foods lobster bisque right now. |
Hi volcanogirl..
I am still getting over my jealousy that you went to a Red Sox/Yankee game PLUS the Patriots/Chargers! Since I am from SD and Sunday was my bday and anniversary, that would of been a super fun thing to do.. We went to the Cape and stayed in Brewster but we really wanted to go to Nantucket but didn't think 2 days was enough.. We were talking like that at the end of our trip too. :) |
I see that Gina was the double dipper on the games..
Still you went to Fenway.. :-[ |
OP - Legal Seafoods ships almost everything anywhere - expensive, but cheaper than another trip to Boston to get your lobster bisque. Start dropping holiday or birthday hints now. (They have a website)
|
Tahiti - no problem LOL - believe me, my husband would have gone to every game if I didn't force some other forms of culture on him. His eyes were glazing over at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and I know he was thinking about the Pats! We will have to go next trip.
gail, really?! Now I can continue to feed my addiction. Must go drop some hints... :) |
"we walked to Modern Pastry. We really liked this place - thought the quality of the food was better than Mike's - great cannoli!"
Another satisfied customer! I'm glad you enjoyed Modern (and Artu' and Legal's). Great trip report! |
