June, July or August - which month has least mosquitos?

Hello! We are considering an Alaska trip next summer. I've heard the mosquitos are as big as cows. Which month will have the least mosquitos? June? July? August? Should we even worry about them?

Thanks!

We went at the beginning of August 2005 and had no problems with mosquitos in Denali. Did have some closer to Anchorage and Seward, but it wasn't terrible, and once I put the bug spray on, I had no problems at all. Click on my screen name to find my trip report! :-)

luvtravl,

I spent three weeks in Alaska in August and did not have any problems with the skeeters. I've been told that they are worse in earlier in the summer.

It also depends where you go. Myself, I don't go to Wonder Lake before mid August- historic for gross bug problems. Can be anywhere in the bush. Not likely a problem in the "cities".

They hatch out in May/June and are a problem pretty much through July, then decline rapidly through August and into September. There are exceptions - seldom a problem in Anchorage or in SE Alaska; they're around longer near ponds, wetlands, etc. (same as everywhere else) and in tundra country. Use Deet.

But should you worry about them? Uh.. no.
