"June Gloom" in San Diego????
 

We're staying at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines in mid-June and a friend mentioned to look out for the "June Gloom". What is it and do I need to consider changing my dates. I'm planning on spending a lot of time at the beach, Sea World, the Zoo, etc. with the family.

I wasn't familiar with June gloom until we went to San Diego several years ago. Basically, the weather was cool and dank...I bought a heavy sweatshirt that I wore everywhere and any thought of the beach was out. We left several days earlier than we'd planned.

The "June gloom" refers to persistent dense coastal fog that often hugs the coast/beaches at that time of year. Some people say it burns off by noon or early afternoon most days, others claim June is the worst month of the year in San Diego weather-wise because of the depressing grayness at the beaches. I've encountered both scenarios when I've been in San Diego in June - but I live in Northern Calif. so I'll let San Diego residents take a position on what they think is statistically most likely.

I was raised in San Diego. I have not lived there for 30 years!! This is a term that was used even back then. My Mother always referred to June as the "June gloom" which previous posters describe very well. I am sure it has not changed. Not even in 30 years. You probably will do well with the zoo and sea world. You might even get lucky and have some sunny days. For your sake I hope so. Otherwise the beach would be scrached off the agenda.

Oh Boy, I remember that Gloom! Drove to San Diego from LA, wanted to go to the Zoo, it was wet chilly and foggy for two days. On the way back to LA, the sun came out again.

I live in San Diego, and if you want to spend a lot of time at the beach, then June is not the best time to come here. Since you have flexibility in your travel plans, I suggest you come in July or August when it is much more likely to be sunny. (September is also one of our hottest months, but probably not an option if you have children).

I've lived in San Diego for 5 yrs now, and it still surprises me just how long it really takes to warm up here (like 80 everyday). July, August and September are great months to visit. The water temp is much better later in the summer also. <BR><BR>Happy planning! And have a great vacation!
