July 4th in Boston

Is the Midtown Hotel a good place to stay over the July 4th Holiday in Boston? I don't want to be to far from the Harbor where all the festivities are going to be held. Also, any travel tips would be appreciated, this is my first trip to Boston. Thanks.

The Midtown Hotel is a perfectly good location. It is not the best looking hotel, at least from the outside. 4th of July in Boston is great, but a little overwhelming. I would advise getting up pretty early on the 4th, walking over to the Charles River, bring a blanket, picnic food and prepare to spend the day and night on the Charles. It get sooo. . . packed with people. It you are bringing kids, keep a close eye and prepare them for massive crowds. There are toilets on the river and also food vendors. Definitely wear sneakers and sunscreen (if it is summy)

When in Boston, go to MFA, Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, Take a Duck Tour etc.

Have fun.

Diane, If you will enter July and Boston in the text search portion of this site, you will come up with six posts which will offer you probably more than enough information and suggestions on how to celebrate the 4th in Boston. I offer this suggestion so as not to repeat myself on this topic and raise the ire of the Forum community.

It's a great time to be in Boston. Your hotel is conveniently located. The harbor has activities before the 4th, but the Charles River is the place to be on the 4th (check a map) and you're actually closer to it than you are to the harbor. You'll love it.

Instead of going to the Pops concert on July 4, go on July 3 when they have a sort of dress rehersal for the next night. Same performers and pretty much the same music. No fireworks or bells, but not very crowded either. Send me a note if you have some particular interests. Good luck.

If you have reservations over July 4th at the Midtown, consider yourself very fortunate. Otherwise, they're probably booked by now. I agree that the location is excellent. There's a subway stop right outside the entrance. This is more of an upscale motor inn with large comfortable rooms. In my opinion, it's the best value in the city of Boston. With the very moderate rates here, you can use the difference for taxis if needed.
