July 4th Fireworks in NYC

To clarify information for a couple of people who had asked about seeing these fireworks.

This year the fireworks were over the East River - near the Brooklyn bridge,

There were more than 3 million spectators (possibly held down by the bad weather early in the day) on both the east and west banks of the river - many on Brooklyn Promenade. So yes, it will be crowded.

And I understand that subway and buses(and regular cab/car traffic) into the area did not restart until about midnight - meaning most spectators had to walk a distance out of the area - to spread out the number of people in any one area and avoid unsafe crowding of subways.

So - a lot of fun if you are prepared - but not for anyone who doesn't like crowds. (Similar to any other msjor event in NYC, which typically draws upward of a million spectators Remember, this is not just people from the 9 million NYC residents but also from the suburbs - and the whole Metro area is well more than 20 million people.)

I watched it on TV. The commute was very short, and there was a nice wine list.
