July 3 drive from Philly to NH...advice please

We normally take the GWB to the Henry Hudson/Cross County/Saw Mill and then on to 684/84. But I'm wondering if there will be issues due to the July 4th holiday. Is there extra bridge security or lots of extra traffic?

We are doing the drive on July 3. Any thoughts?

Tons of extra traffic. If you aren't ready to cross the GWB by about 10 am assume traffic will be hell. (And I would listen to traffic radio - 1010 WINS - to see if there are any accidents or other problems.)

Would we be better off going up 87 I think it is and crossing at Newburgh?

Or go over the Tappan Zee

Yes, up 87 and cross at Newburgh.

Stay as far west as you can as long as you can. You will be a lot better off if you are going to Sunapee or the White Mountains and can take I-91 than if you are going toward the coast. Even then, you can go north from Worcester on , what, 25 and join 495 later.

On the Friday before Mother's Day, we had to wait half an hour in line to buy gas at Montvale on the GSP and it took almost twice as long as normal from the Tappan Zee to Hartford. At leat you are not driving to the Cape!

Thanks everyone. We are going to Nashua...so at least it's not Hampton or Seabrook. That would be awful!

I think we are going to bail out early and head up on the 2nd. Hoping most people aren't taking that extra day off.
