Jones Beach Air Show
How horrific is the traffic on the way to it? we will be coming from Connecticut. Hopefully leaving Hartford around 5:30 am or so to get there about 9.

How are you planning on coming? Taking a ferry - or going all the way through NYC?
Don;t know how big a deal the show is - never heard of it - but getting from Hartford to LI is that long a trip on any day. |
Possibly driving all the way. Work just announced that there is a bus to bring people as well leaving at 6am so that is my primary option right now. The ferry just adds extra expense and hassle but may prove to be the right way to do it if we decide to drive. How hard is it to get from Manhattan out there on the subway? Or from Metro North?

No subway to Jones Beach--It is outside the New York City limits. To reach Jones Beach by public transportation from Hartford will be an unpleasant series of connections--MetroNorth to Grand Central; subway: S train one stop to 1 train one stop to Penn Station; LIRR to Freeport; bus to the beach--painful. This is why cars were invented.

Thanks. Thats what I had figured. I am going to take the bus from work. Brings us to and from the airshow for $20 (includes food / drink at the show and VIP Seating). This is barring us from opting to go to the Mets game that night.

Jones Beach isn;t in NYC - it's out on Long Island. The subway goes nowhere near it. There used to be buses from NYC to Jones beach but I'm not sure if they're still running. You can take the LIRR (from Penn Station not Grand Central where MetroNorth comes in) to a nearby town - but would have to organize taxis back and forth rom there I think. I would go to the Air Show web site and try to find info.
(Sorry I'm originally from LI - so only know about driving to the beach.) |
Ended up taking the bus. took us 5 hours to get there due to the bus driver getting lost and only finding car routes. But once we got there, really enjoyed the Air Show. Saturday was a perfect day for it. The Thunderbirds were the highlight for me plus the P-51 Mustang Formation team known as the Horsemen. They also had an aerobatic helicopter that can do loops and fly nearly upside down. Great time. The ride home was much less eventful and took 2.5 hours.
