John Harvard's Brew House

Can anyone give me a review of this restaurant? We are looking for a casual place that a 13yr old boy would like in the Cambridge area of Boston. Thanks,

I'm glad you qualified the location since there is also one in Washington, DC.

There is also one in Radnor, PA. I've been there and to the one in D.C. Somewhat darkish lighting, decent menu. Not anything special for a 13 yr old boy, but he probably won't dislike it. 13 yr old boys are typically are hard to impress. Personally my 14 yr old likes all you can eat at Charlie Changs. That impresses him. He eats like a starved horse.

As the name implies it's a better place for beer than food. It's sort of your typical burger, fish and chips joint. I would suggest Bartley's for a 13 yr. old-or anyone for that matter. Awesome burgers...it's in institution in Harvard Sq.

Depends on the 13-yr.-old. It's right in the midst of the Harvard Sq. "scene," and the food is fine in the sense that it's steaks and salads and burgers and such -- unimaginative but good enough and what 13-yr.-old welcomes "imaginative" food? Not sure I'd make it a destination restaurant but the locale is half the deal there.

You could also consider the very popular Border Cafe for decent Mexican food (it's around and "behind" the Harvard Coop), or Fire and Ice (in the same neighborhood on Church St.) where he can pick out his own ingredients for a stir-fry -- fun although not always perfect food.

I agree, John Harvard's is ok, but Bartley's or Border would be a much better choice IMO.

There is a restaurant in Harvard Square called Fire & Ice. You are given a plate which you take to various meat, vegetable and sauce stations where you can choose the combination that you want. You then bring it to a central grill where you can watch the chef cook your food. it is not gourmet, but it is as good as any of the pubs and fun, especially for a 13 year old.

Border Cafe is *really* lively and would probably be more upbeat for a 13 y.o We have taken out of towners w/kids and they always like it. The menu has many kinds of food--altho tilted toward a sort of Tex-Mex/Cajun bent but also inlcuding (I think) burgers.
