Taxi: Since you are arriving right at rush hour (on a Friday no less) taxi may cost you as much as $40-45 plus tolls plus tip. Expect some slow traffic. Trip is about 1 hour.
New York Airport Service has buses between JFK and midtown. Depending on what hotel you are in, they may be able to drop you off at your hotel. Roundtrip from JFK is $23 per person. Their website is http://www.nyairportservice.com/
Limo: There are several good limo services in NYC averaging $40-50. (Do not rely on the guys that stand just outside the gate and ask if you need a ride). One that I've had success with is Communicar www.communicar.com.
Subway: You can pick up a free shuttle bus outside the terminal that will take you to the A train. Cost is $1.50 per person/or $4.00 per person if you buy an unlimited day "funpass" (which will be valid for all subway & bus fares until 3am). The bumpy, often crowded ride, takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get to the theater district and does take a bit of stamina. It will stop at 42nd Street/8th Avenue which is Times Square area.
