JFK to NYC to Newark in 24th hrs

We will arrive JFK at 8AM on a Sunday in July and then leave for London from Newark the following Monday. We won't have much luggage fortunately.

We want to visit Ground Zero mainly. How should we get there from JFK? Can we check our luggage somewhere near there? We would like to stay at a hotel near Newark since our flight leave so early on Monday. Any suggestions for a hotel near Newark that's not too expensive, and how do we get to Newark from NYC? Thanks

For your transportation options, I will only suggest you do a search ... how to get between Manhattan and the various airports is a subject that's been discussed to death in these forums.

Now ... regarding luggage, you have 3 choices: 1-You can check luggage at Penn station *IF* you have an Amtrak ticket. I suppose you could get an Amtrak ticket to Newark, or to EWR, as you're bound for there anyway. 2-Try a Manhattan hotel bellman -- approach him with luggage AND tip visable in hand and ask if he could store your bags for a few hours 3-Find your destination hotel for Sunday night, and return to NYC. We've stayed at the airport Hilton before, and they had scheduled shuttles to Newark Penn station (note: NewARK Penn, not NYC Penn), where you could get to NYC via Amtrak, NewJerseyTransit, or PATH trains. Sometimes good deals are to be found at the Hilton Gateway hotel, in Newark, across the street from Newark Penn, and they had shuttle service to the airport.

Try http://newark.airporthotelguide.com/ for other lodging choices.

Can stay in Tribeca (Comopoitan is clean and cheap $100) and can walk to Ground Zero. Tribeca is about a twenty minute ride to Newark in off hours so you should be fine staying there and wither grabbing a cab or arranging for a car service 1800-666-6666 (?) or try the 7's!

I would actually go first to the Newark area, check into your hotel and then head into NYC from the Newark area. That way you won't have to lug luggage into and out of the city and you can stay as late as you want. If the hotel will not let you check in that early (ask when you make a reservation), they will let you leave your luggage.

You can take an express bus from JFK to Newark in 90 minutes, costs $24. Runs every two hours on the hour. Take a look at http://www.kennedyairport.com/aviation/connfram.HTM or call Airporter at 1-800-385-4000. You can reserve a seat ahead of time. When you arrive at Newark Airport, you could then get a hotel shuttle (see below) to take you and your bags to the hotel.

You can be in the Wall Street/Ground Zero area in under 20minuts from the main train station in Newark. Your hotel may have a shuttle that goes to Newark Penn Station, or you could take a cab, or go back to Newark airport and take the Air train. It is under 15 minutes by car from any of the hotels below to Newark Penn Station.

I have copied the info below from the Newark Airport website (http://www.newarkairport.com) These are the best located, IMO, but there are others on the site. I believe all would have free shuttles to the airport terminals and possibly Newark Penn Station. The Hilton Newark Gateway noted below is across the street from Newark Penn Station.

I think how you travel from place to place depends on how many of you there are. Some of the prices for buses, shuttles etc. don't make sense vs a cab/private car depending upon number.

I also think where you stay depends on what time you're leaving on Monday. Assuming you're not taking an 8am flight, I would opt for staying in DOWNTOWN Manhattan (Wall St., Soho, Tribeca) You can check in & frop bags. You'll be near ground zero. There will be other things to do after that & a decent dinner (vs being stuck in an airport hotel). Downtown MY is close to Newark airport. If there are only 2 of you you might even consider bidding for a downtown hotel on Priceline.

Sorry for the typos-meant DROP bags and downtown NY is very close to Newark.

Further to my comments on costs of transport, there's a flat fee of $35 (plus toll & tax) from JFK to Manhattan but I think that's to MIDTOWN. Does anybody know how much more it might be to downtown (ie. Tribeca)?

Take the Long Term Parking Shuttle bus to the long term parking lot/ Howard beach Train station . Get off take the A train / Subway to The Port Authority bus terminal 42nd & 8th you will be able to check your bag there. then you can take the #6 train or other subway line to city hall / fulton street / canal street, will put you in the ground zero area lots of things to do in that area. Then you can take the subway back get your bags and take the subway to Penn station( off the A line ) then NJ transit train to Newark station then the Newark Airport Monorail get a hotel around the airport that has shuttle service to and from the Airport this is the cheapest way purchase a ( metro card)

You could wind up wasting lots of time waiting for shuttles & subways early on a Sun. morning. I would spring for a taxi. It will be quick at that hour.

Your hotel options are
stay in NYC near Penn station (34th st & 7th ave.)to take a train to EWR on Monday

stay in lower Manhattan to be in walking distance of Ground Zero & quick cab or hotel shuttle to EWR

stay near EWR

If your Mon flight is at 8 or 8:30am & you have to be at the airport at 6am, I can understand wanting to stay near the airport. Then take the airport shuttle from JFK to EWR OR find out if the hotel you pick has shuttle service from JFK.

FYI-The Embassy Suites in lower Manhattan is within walking of WTC site. It's also right at Battery Park City which will be lovely on a July Sun. You can have dinner in Chinatown (or at the hotel). They may have transport to EWR. I think thta's what I would do.

Just be careful about depending on public transport (shuttles, trains, vans etc.) for a very early flight. They may not start running early enough.
