JFK to Laguardia info needed!

Hi there,

I've just booked a return trip to Thailand, and upon coming home, it has me arriving at JFK at 7:10 AM (this will be in the summer) and I'll need to transfer to Laguardia to fly home to Toronto. Can I book a 11:30 flight out of Laguardia and still make it if I take a cab? Or should I make it 12:30? 1:30? My flight times to Toronto are flexible at this point.

Also, how much would a cab be from one airport to the other?

Thanks in advance,
tania

11:30 is probably cutting it tight. Even an on-time 7:10 arrival probably means sometime after 8:00 before you can walk out of the building. It could be significantly longer than that. Either way, in the morning you will be fighting rush hour as you try to head across the island and that 12 mile/15 minute drive can be a lot longer. Then you have check-in and security at LGA, which is likely suggested at 2-hours before departure.

So, even under the best circumstances, I can't see you getting to LGA much before 9:00, making that 2-hour suggestion tough to guarantee. I would go with the 12:30 or even the 1:30 flight just to be safe.

The cost might be around $30, but I'm not the best at estimating cab prices.

Even that early in the am I would assume at least an hour from wheels down to having your luggage at the curb. And while LGA is nearby - you're in the middle of rush hour (assuming a weekday) so I would assume another hour. Then, leaving the 2 hour security window - you should have time for the 11:30 flight.

The only issue is if your plane will land on time. I would check on that - and if it's frequently late I would take a later plane.

Taxi from one airport to another will depend on traffic (since meter cost is distance plus waiting time). I would assume no more than $25 or so. There is also a shuttle bus - but it runs I think every 30 minutes - which might or might not fit with your schedule. The bus can also take longer if you're at one of the first terminals and it stops at 5 or 6 others.

Plus, will you be going through customs as a foreigner? That line can be long. I'd book the 12:30 just to be safe.

I would book the 12:30 or 1:30, then if you arrive early enough at LGA seek to get on the earlier flight. Airlines allow this type of same day standby or change for no fee.

That's good to know, J62, thanks! That info may very well come in handy!

Thanks all, for the replies. I'll make it 12:30, then.
